JOHN L. HARPER SCHOLARSHIP
A special scholarship was established in 2001 to honor the memory of
Dr. John L. Harper and his distinguished career for over 27 years at
HSU as a physical geographer, scholar, active environmentalist and published
author. Geography faculty choose an annual recipient. HSU geography
majors whose prime interests are in physical geography or resource &
environment, who have distinguished undergraduate records, and who are
continuing students may apply for the award (details are in the department
office). Applications are usually due the first Monday in April.
A plaque has been posted in Founders Hall 126 -- the Dr. John L. Harper
Room -- where scholarship recipients will have their names engraved.
If you would like to honor Dr. Harper's memory and help fund the scholarship,
please send a check to the Gift Processing Center, Cashier's Office
- SBS 285, Humboldt State University, 1 Harpst St., Arcata, California
95521-8299. Make the check out to HSU and designate JOHN L HARPER SCHOLARSHIP
in comments area of check. Be sure to include a return address so we

HERRING GEOGRAPHY SCHOLARSHIP
Nancy and Steven Herring, HSU Alumni, are pleased to announce the Herring
Geography Scholarship for HSU Geography majors. This award is open to
all
geography majors.
Amount of scholarship
$1000 ($500/semester) applied to student account at HSU for educational
expenses during the academic year.
This scholarship will be offered each Spring for the next academic year. Applications are due by the first Monday in April.
Qualifications
Eligible candidates must meet the following requirements:
1. Enrolled full-time, pursuing a geography degree at HSU.
2. Demonstrate financial need as determined by FAFSA.
3. At least 2.75 GPA.
4. No restrictions on how often a student may apply or be selected.

WILLIAM L. SQUIRE GEOGRAPHY SCHOLARSHIP
William L. Squire William L. Squire (1980-2001), a native of San Francisco,
studied geography at Humboldt State University. His warm nature, enthusiasm,
and sweetness of spirit, coupled with his love of maps, travel, and geography,
inspired all who knew him. His life ended tragically during his junior
year and is commemorated through the William L. Squire Geography Scholarship.
