Personal Statement: My particular area of expertise is cartography, with a strong background in microcomputer lab management and teaching at the university level.

While at the University of California Davis (1988-1996) Geography Department, I developed (with others) and managed two cartography/GIS computer labs.  I served as Chair of the campus GIS Committee, and as Lecturer for the Cartography, Advanced Cartography, and Introduction to GIS courses.

During 1994-1996, I took a leave from lecturing in order to participate as a member of the GIS staff for the Sierra Nevada Ecosystem Project (SNEP).  My role in the project evolved in two primary phases:  1) as one of the principal coordinators for cartographic/GIS aspects of the Late-Successional/Old Growth mapping; and 2) as a GIS staff member using Arc/Info on Sun workstations.

Prior to my work at UCD and SNEP, I worked for the Earth Resource Observation Systems (EROS) division of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in the Alaska Field Office Remote Sensing Lab; for the National Park Service; and for Allan Cartography.

In recent years I have served in two capacities here at Humboldt State University:  First, as Lecturer: Global Positioning Systems and Map Analysis,  Introduction to GIS Concepts, Introduction to the Mapping Sciences, Computer Cartography, Advanced Cartography, and Cartographic Practicum.  Second, since 1999 as Lab Manager for the Geography visualization lab, Kosmos.

I believe strongly in individual projects with a tangible, professional final product.  When students get attached to their own statement of choice, it really raises the bar on how well they do.
