This is just a short comment on what Kirk was saying about primal societies having a complete view of the world, and we don't. I have to say I disagree, but with certain qualifications. We DO have a complete view of the world, and perhaps part of the problem is that we have too many complete views going around. (besides, how could we say that primal societies have a complete view if we didn't know what one was???) It seems like the majority of paradigms with which we are engaged compete, rather than complement each other, and this provides an appearance of chaos. The field is too complex for a single person to grasp, sort, and file all the information needed to see the "complete" picture, but the completeness remains just the same. The fact that a class such as ours is even in existence is an indication that we are in a state of integration and consolidation with the world of affairs. Perhaps we can gain an insight on how this integration can be brought about by observing and participating closely to this development in the class as the semester runs its course.
