Humboldt Earthquake Education Center
ABOUT THE HUMBOLDT EARTHQUAKE EDUCATION CENTER
The Humboldt Earthquake Education Center was established in 1985 and is a non-profit organization operating within the Department of Geology, Humboldt State University. The primary purpose of the Center is to provide information on North Coast, California seismicity and to foster earthquake awareness, preparedness and education programs in elementary, Jr. High and Sr. High Schools, and for the general public. Activities of the Center include:
- Development of curriculum for classroom use.
- Workshops for teachers and students in teacher preparation programs.
- Providing speakers for conferences and meetings of North Coast community groups.
- Operating the 'Humboldt Earthquake Hotline', a tape recorded telephone message updated daily on local, regional and global earthquake activity (707) 826-6020.
- Preparation and distribution of earthquake education materials for the general public. Publications include a Geology and Ground Shaking map of Humboldt and Del Norte Counties, California and an earthquake preparedness magazine "On Shaky Ground: Living With Earthquakes On The North Coast".
- Intensity studies of regional earthquakes. Earthquakes studied include the 1980 magnitude 7.1 Trinidad earthquake, the 1991 magnitude 6.0 Honeydew earthquake, the 1992 magnitude 7.1, 6.6, 6.6 Cape Mendocino earthquake sequence, the 1993 magnitude 5.9 and 6.0 Klamath Falls earthquakes, the 1994 magnitude 6.7 Northridge earthquake, the 1994 magnitude 6.9 Mendocino fault earthquake, the 1994 magnitude 6.3 Double Spring Flat earthquake (near South Lake Tahoe and Carson City), and the 1994 magnitude 5.4 Eureka earthquake.
