Active tectonics, Quaternary tectonics, Quaternary stratigraphy, fluvial geomorphology, sediment budgets
Ph.D., Geology, 1977, University of California, Santa Cruz
B.A., Geology, 1971, Princeton UniversityProfessional Background
Joined HSU 1992
Associate Professor, Western Washington University, Bellingham, Washington, 1984-1992
Research Geologist, Redwood National Park, 1977-1984
Research Interests
My publications and the thesis topics that I have advised (below) reflect my interests, which range from late Quaternary deformation and paleoseismicity at active convergent margins to sediment budgets of forested watersheds. I have pursued these interests through field studies in the western United States (northern California, Oregon and Washington) as well as in New Zealand, Japan and Indonesia.
Presently, I am most active, research-wise, in projects that use the tools of Quaternary stratigraphy to decipher paleoseismic history on the Cascadia and Sumatran subduction zones. I continue my interest in fluvial geomorphology and basin-scale geomorphic process studies largely through advisement to Masters students working in these areas.
