Past Green Campus Projects:
Green Eye:
A student mad spoof of Showtimes "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy".
This short (approximately 15 min) film featuries several greenies
from Arcata, CA that help to make one Humboldt State student's life
more sustainable and "earth friendly." Chock full of information and
laughs.
Redwood Manor:
A pilot energy competition where individual apartments were
challenged to reduce their energy consumption. The winners were
determined by the percent reduction compared to a baseline of previous
years. The residents of the winning apartment each won an iPod mini
and 2nd and 3rd place winners recieved goodie bags of gift
certificates to local buisness.
Also included in this project was the creation of Humboldt State's
first ever certified Energy Star Dorm Room.
Spring 2006 Semester-
Office Energy Audits - 3 Offices were audited, the
Lumberjack, Clubs, and AS offices. These three were chosen because of
their high use and student traffic, which should result in more
outreach about this program. Varying degrees of savings resulted, with an average of 33% energy savings accomplished
GC film series - Green Campus put on a series of energy related
films (although some are only vaguely related) in an attempt to raise
awareness about these issues and to connect with students or other
people who are interested in our program and would like to help us. Many factors contributed to the success of this project, and the final two movies were dropped from the line up due to a projected lack of student involvement
Institutionalized Sustainability - GC's Krystal Rogers submitted a policy update to Housing, which they considered and agreed to incorporate a student part-time position to coordinate sustainability issues in the on-campus housing. She also petitioned the HSU President, Dr. Rollin Richmond to consider a full-time staff position to coordinate these similar issues on a campus-wide scale.
Neil, a graphic design student, designed sustainability related signs which Housing has agreed to manufacture and put up in the residence halls, to emphasize HSU's dedication to helping the environment. Energy saving is one aspect of those sustainability issues.
Energy Detective - We got permission to install the TEDs in the
Multi-cultural center, the YES house, and CCAT. After getting them physically installed, we will educate the staff working in those houses in how to interpret the information and ways to reduce their energy usage.
Home Energy Audit Toolkits - We assembled
toolkits which include all the needed hardware and
some simple instructions that students will be able to check out in
order to reduce their energy consumption at home.
