What is Green Campus?
The Green Campus Program is a Statewide student-implemented energy efficiency program at 12 UC and CSU campuses and Stanford University.  Green Campus is a program of the non-profit organization The Alliance to Save Energy.  The Program has been made possible through grants and funding from the investor-owned utilities (IOUs) and the ratepayers of California. HSU Green Campus operates under the auspices of PG&E, SCE, and UC/CSU/IOU Energy Efficiency Partnership. Thank you, Citizens of California, for making our work possible.

Since starting in 2004, the HSU Green Campus team has won the 2005 and 2007 UC/CSU Best Practices Award for Student-led Energy Efficiency Programs and the 2007 CSU Office of the Chancellor's Energy Project Competition.

Some of our past accomplishments include:
• Leading the effort to create HSU's Sustainability Coordinator position
• Performing office and building energy audits across campus
• Planning and running energy competitions in the residence halls
• Creating an Energy Star certified residence hall room
• Creating, in cooperation with HSU Housing & Dining, a Housing Energy Management Intern (HEMI) position
• Installing TED, a real-time energy metering device, in three houses on campus
• Supplying free CFLs and power strips to the campus community
• Making our own education video, The Phantom Hunter

My name is Maxime Tanti.  I first became involved with Green Campus in the Fall 2009.  I am currently studying Environmental Resources Engineering.  Green Campus along with my studies have been a great way to develop my skills in the energy efficiency field and I am excited to continue saving energy on campus in the coming months.

Jon Mitscha

photograph of Jon MitschaHi, my name is Jon Mitscha. I’m junior in the new Energy and Climate Change option for Environmental Science.  I first got involved with Green Campus last semester as a volunteer and had a great experience, and am very excited to now be a Program Coordinator.  Humboldt has an established program and I know this will be a terrific year! Energy is indispensable in our culture, and we are consuming at rate that cannot be sustained.  Everyone wins when we treat energy with the respect it disserves!

Interns

 Maighdlyn Brown

photograph of Maighdlyn BrownMy name is Maighdlyn and I’m a sophomore here at Humboldt.  I’m originally from the Seattle area though I moved to Southern California when I was 14.  I’m an Environmental Science Policy Major and plan to do everything I can to help the world achieve sustainability.  Here at Humboldt, so much of the student population, as well as staff and faculty cares about the environment; I feel that before we can go change the world we’ve got to start with changing ourselves.  This is why I enjoy participating in Green Campus as well as other sustainability driven organizations like Power Shift and Focus the Nation.  In the future I would like to stick with the Green Campus Program and help reach out to our campus, implementing more energy savings as well as teaching people how they can save energy at home.

Adrienne Spitzer

Hey my name is Adrienne Spitzer and I am from Santa Cruz, CA. I am currently a freshman at HSU studying Environmental Science. This is my first semester working with Green Campus as photograph of Adrienne Spitzer an intern. I decided to work with Green Campus because I wanted to get involoved with an organization on campus, in particular one that is dedicated to conservation. I hope to learn more about energy efficiency and ways we can improve HSU's energy usage. I hope that through my work with Green Campus I can make connections with faculty and my peers here at HSU and help educate the general public on ways to become energy efficient. I am very excited about the Relight Redwood Bowl project because I think it is important that we address the issue of light pollution and inefficiency of the lighting system that is currently in use. I hope that I have the opportunity to work with Green Campus from now until I graduate because I find the program to be crucial for HSU and it's students success in building a more sustainable future.

Nolan Kloer

photograph of Nolan KloerI am a fourth semester student in the Environmental Resources Engineering department at Humboldt State University, and a first semester Intern with the Green Campus program.  In coming to HSU I was unsure of my choice to pursue a technical major, but was motivated to challenge myself with a course of study that seemed foreign and intimidating.  What I have learned about myself through the process is that I love problem solving!  Specifically, I am interested in working to help solve some of the most complex and intimidating environmental problems that face humanity.  I became involved with Green Campus this semester in an effort to help increase energy efficiency on the HSU campus.  I think that energy efficiency is the first and most effective step to ensuring a sustainable future.  Let’s find the balance together!

Robin Ray

Robin Ray is a junior in the environmental science department, and a marketing and public relations intern for Green Campus. She enjoys serving as a liaison between the organization and her fellow students. Currently, she is helping to plan the first annual Eco-Art Exhibition and worked on developing a new logo for the organization. Besides sharing the importance of the energy efficiency message with students, she enjoys being involved on campus and participates in several Associated Students Committees, as well as the Pre-Law Society. After Humboldt State University, Robin plans to devote her career to developing strong, scientifically based environmental policy.

Taylor Riis

I am from the small coastal town of Half Moon Bay, 20 minutes south of San Francisco and an photograph of Taylor Riishour north of Santa Cruz. I came to Humboldt State University in the fall semester of 2007. I am currently studying Environmental Resources Engineering and loving every second of it... so far. I joined Green Campus as an intern this semester (spring 2009) and have been working on Office Energy Audits. I'm really stoked working with everyone in Green Campus and have found many to be ERE majors as well! When I'm not working, or studying (which seldom happens) I am soaking up the sun and saline of the Pacific ocean. Hope to see you at some GC events or  as an intern in years to come.

Blair Kinser

photograph of Blair KinserI am a currently student at HSU working on my bachelors in environmental resource engineering. I love HSU and anything to make it a better school should be done, that includes making it more enviromentally friendly. Green campus is a great way to contribute to the reduction of green house gases due to Humboldt's energy usage. I photograph of Blair Kinseram also involved with Renewable Energy Student Union (RESU), Engineers without Borders (EWB), and another internship with Humboldt Public Works. If your looking to get more invovled and have an interest in making the Earth a healthier place to live I recommend joining up with Green Campus and any other clubs invovled in energy usage reduction. Cheers

Emily Bowes

 photograph of Emily Bowes

I am a freshman Environmental Resource Engineering major and very excited about working with Green Campus for my first semester. I grew up in the Midwest then moved to Southern Oregon for my four years of high school.  I want to use my degree to help protect the beautiful mountains, rivers and forests I grew to love living in Oregon. At Humboldt, I want to do all I can to help transition our campus into a more sustainable environment by working with the energy audit team and any other project I can get involved with. I love art, music, sunshine and throwing a Frisbee around whenever possible. :)

Justin Fricker

Words cannot begin to describe the enthusiasm I have for the Green Campus program and the photograph of Justin Fricker energy efficiency projects on the agenda for this coming semester. As a 1st year continuing graduate student from the San Diego area, studying Natural Resource Planning and Interpretation, I felt it was essential for me to begin familiarizing myself with all of the various energy saving and reduced carbon emissions practices that Green Campus promotes. I am fortunate to be working under the leadership of an excellent set of program coordinators and with an equally passionate group of interns. I hope that my position as an energy audit intern brings about many new and exciting challenges and continues to instill a sense of energy conservation in my personal and professional life.
