Spring 2006 Projects
Fall 2006 Projects New GC Coordinator Hiring: Since losing two coordinators to retirement last June, our first task was to hire on two additional Interns to complete our staff. After our deliberation, Ben Mattio and Carmen King were chosen. Read about them on our "More about Us" page . Housing Intern Hiring: Due to the success Green Campus had in the Housing Department last year, Housing agreed to create and fund a position that reflected our own. After a long and arduous application process, eventually Ryan Zeils and Paul Caradonna were chosen to fill the position. CFL Exchange: The CFL exchange is often touted as one of Green Campus's most successful ventures, so we at HSU tried our hand at it. Our exchange table, staffed by GC Coordinators and faithful volunteers, operated two days a week for two months, and managed to distribute 964 CFLs over that time. Coordinator Carmen King generated some helpful comparisons for what this means in terms of energy savings and other environmental benefits. For example, we have prevented carbon emissions equivalent to 52.5 barrels of oil. See the complete display Office Audits Round 2: Due to the success and popularity of the office audits done in spring of '06, another slate was lined up to continue the program. This time, The president's office, Dean Susan Higgins' office and the KRFH studio were chosen to undergo our scrutiny. This time around, we achieved an average reduction of about XX%. The results from each audit are available: President's Office Dean Susan Higgins KRFH Studio Library Display: For the 2006 holiday Season, Green Campus put together a festive and informative display for the HSU library. The display, titled "The 12 days of saving" highlighted twelve easy ways for people to make their holidays more energy efficient, and featured a "sustainability tree" representation of the the organization of environmental clubs and organizations on campus, working together in solidarity to make HSU a more sustainable campus. Pictures of the display can be seen on our photo album. If you missed the display, it can be downloaded and a quick reminder is listed below. 1. Give Green Tags 2. Make Your Gifts 3. Buy Local Food 4. LED Holiday Lights 5. Keep Warm (put on a sweater) and Turn down your Thermostat 6. Make Energy Saving Resolutions 7. Insulate Your Home and Water Heater 8. CFLs make great Stocking Stuffers 9. Carpool 10. Use a Powerstrip to Stop Phantom Loads 11. Celebrate and Promote Sustainability 12. Deck Your Halls with Recycled or Reused Materials Campus Sustainability Day/Green Rush v 2.0: Green Campus contributed to this event this year by participating in the roundtable discussion on sustainability on the quad, the Green Rush tabling event, the CFL Exchange, and showing "Oil on Ice" in the bottom of the J. (And eating local food at the J for dinner!) Captain Planet movie nights: Captain Planet, a TV show that is both a fun exercise in nostalgia and an environmental awareness builder, was a perfect choice to bring people together and facilitate talking about Green Campus's role in the grander scheme of things. Summer 2006 Project The Eureka Housing Authority, in order to comply with regulations set by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD ), wanted to have energy audits done on a sampling of their housing units in downtown Eureka. Morgan King of Strategic Energy Innovations (SEI ) was subcontracted to perform the task. In order for Mr. King to complete his task, he in turn contacted Green Campus to assist him with the evaluation of the housing units. This project drew on skills learned from the office audits completed in Spring '06, but applied them on a much larger scale. Read the complete report . Other Projects Green Eye: Redwood Manor: Spring 2006 Semester Office Energy Audits: Lumberjack office Clubs office Associated Students offices GC film series: Institutionalized Sustainability: Neil, a graphic design student, designed sustainability related signs which Housing has agreed to manufacture and put up in the residence halls, to emphasize HSU's dedication to helping the environment. Energy saving is one aspect of those sustainability issues. The Energy Detective: We got permission to install the TEDs in the Multi-cultural center, the YES house, and CCAT. After getting them physically installed, we will educate the staff working in those houses in how to interpret the information and ways to reduce their energy usage. This project is incomplete and will be finished Fall 2006. Home Energy Audit Toolkits: We assembled toolkits which include all the needed hardware and some simple instructions that students will be able to check out in order to reduce their energy consumption at home.
