Chemical Labeling

The Hazardous Communication Standard (CCR Title 8, Section 5194) and the Laboratory Standard (CCR Title 8, Section 5191) requires that all containers of hazardous substances be labeled with the identity of the chemical and have appropriate hazard warnings. The name of the chemical must be spelled out. Abbreviations and formulas are not acceptable, unless the spelled out chemical name is also present. The name(s) of the chemical(s) and the hazard warnings are the minimum requirements, additional information may be noted on the label.

The HSU Chemistry and Biology Departments have chemical labeling software programs. Click here for examples of Chemistry and Biology Department labels. See the Chemistry Stockrooms (Sc A 569 and Sc A 566) and the Biology Stockroom (Sc B 230) for more information about creating these labels. Labels for many chemicals used in biological sciences can be accessed and printed from the Biology Stockroom website.

Labels do not have to be computer prepared. Tape or a suitable paper affixed label with the required information written on it is acceptable.
