Improved Internet Connections and Security

In 2005-2006 , technical advisory groups and ITS recognized the increasing need for better protections against network based threats to electronic systems on campus. As a part of the CSU ITRP2 project, HSU received redundant firewalls and installation support for the campus connection to the Internet.

HSU User Name and Password Secure Authentication Project

If you haven't already, you MUST set your HSU User Name password. This is an effort to consolidate User Name and passwords across campus. The new password will affect campus computer labs, Email, Moodle, Wireless Access, Inter-Library Loan and other HSU computer services.

HSU has been working to unify the HSU User Name and Password used to access electronic services offered by the campus. What this means is that when a student, staff, or faculty member officially enters the university population they are given a standard HSU User Name, formerly known as the HSU NetID and accounts are automatically created on systems based on their university role.

Changes Fall 2005:

HSU STOPS forwarding SPAM

Starting Thursday, October 06, 2005, messages with a subject of [SPAM?] sent to your HSU preferr ed email address will no longer be delivered automatically to your email client but will instead be placed in a personal "Quarantine account" that the campus message-filtering hardware system (the Barracudas) has created for you. You will receive a daily report in your HSU preferred email account that will detail all of the spam messages that have been sent to you.

HSU Security Initiatives

Download HSU's Security Certificate and change your email client settings to protect your user name and password when connecting to HSU's email server. Don't delay.

HSU Blocks Port 25 for Sending Email from off campus

HSU blocks the standard port 25 for outgoing SMTP connections for off campus users, including ResNet. If you receive an error while sending mail from your HSU account while off campus, you can set your email client to use port 587 for outgoing messages.
This chage will take affect Monday, October 3.
Individuals on campus will still need to adjust their email client settings to make a secure connection.

ITS Requires Secure Server Communication

Information Technology Services has been working diligently on increasing information security on campus. Some of the current projects include removing insecure access to the email and web servers on campus. This is done by allowing only secure connection software to the servers.
