Why is the world the way it is? Why do some nations struggle while others become superpowers? Why have certain political, economic, social and cultural trends endured or reappeared as others have died away? And what’s next on the horizon? The answers to these and other important questions lie in the study of the past.If you think history is simply a record of names and dates, think again. Historians examine the complex ideas behind events of the past to help us understand the present and chart a more successful future. In a dynamic and ever-changing world, they are our modern-day guides. At Humboldt State, we prepare our students with all the tools of the historian: critical thinking, high-tech research, project development, and excellent writing and presentation skills. Many of our students want to attend graduate school. Others know they want to teach or write. Some just love history. But whatever you decide to do after graduation, your study of history will give you the skills and understanding for lifelong success.
Our students don’t merely take history courses. They learn to be historians. As you begin your studies toward a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in History, you’ll learn the tools of the historian and how to apply them, including the evaluation and use of primary sources online. After a foundation in American and world history, you’ll reinforce your knowledge and skills with diverse upper-level courses. Along the way, you’ll be a scholar in your own right through research papers and original presentations.
Our Teachers Know You
You’ll find no giant lecture halls at Humboldt State. Here you’ll undertake comprehensive studies in history in a very personalized setting. That means small class sizes and approachable faculty scholars who care deeply about your education. You’re sure to find classes and professors that suit your style of learning, whether through group projects, lectures, discussions, papers, oral presentations or a combination of these. Your professor might even join you and our History Club at the movies for the latest historical thriller—followed by a conversation about where the movie went wrong!
You Put Your Skills to Work
In your final year, you’ll undertake a major research paper—on a topic of your choice—with faculty guidance, peer review and a final oral presentation. Other schools might reserve this level of scholarship for graduate school, but not Humboldt State! Our students also present their research at events outside of class, including our department’s own history conference and similar gatherings of historians around the state. In addition, we often help students find internships with organizations such as Fort Humboldt State Historic Park, the Humboldt County Historical Society and the Clarke Historical Museum.
We help you succeed
Many students in our program continue their studies at some of the best graduate schools in the country. Others become outstanding primary or secondary teachers of history or social studies. But those choices are only the beginning. The study of history can help prepare you for exciting careers in business, law, government, journalism, publishing, politics, historical preservation, museum management or curatorship, archive management and much more. Whatever career choice you make, the knowledge and skills you acquire here will help you succeed—in work and life. Ready to get started?
