LETTER FROM SOFIA PEREIRA, AS PRESIDENT
Dear HSU Students,
Thank you for your interest in getting involved with the Associated Students! We are excited that you are choosing to participate in one of the most active student governments in the CSU system. One may wonder how as a student, they can take ownership of their school. We can all take ownership of Humboldt State by being a part of the decision-making process. There are committees on our campus that address almost every issue possible on this campus and as students, we have the power to have a say in how decisions are made. We encourage students to sit on every committee available on our campus and have their voices heard. Within this booklet, you will find descriptions of over 55 campus committees that you can make a difference in!
Each of the committees included in this booklet has a particular decision-making function. Many of the decisions made on this campus are the result of committee work. This is why students play a vital and significant role in this process. All of the committees listed have student representation of some form, so it is important to the Associated Students Council that the committee you choose is right for you. If you need any help deciding what committee will be the best fit for your interests, please don’t hesitate to contact myself or any of the three Associated Students’ Vice Presidents.
Once you have decided to join a committee, the process for being appointed to a committee position is simple. Select the committee of choice, fill out a one page application, and attend an interview. Within a few days, I or one of the Vice Presidents will contact you about being formally appointed at the next Associated Students’ council meeting.
It is important to note that all committee decisions and/or recommendations are advisory to the campus President. However, rest assured that the Associated Students will always support the decisions and perspectives of our student representatives! You are always welcome to visit us in our office which is located in the University Center South Lounge. You may also reach us by phone at 826-4221, or by e-mail at hsuas@humboldt.edu.
This 2008-2009 school year is about taking action and responsibility for our campus’ future. You can make a positive difference at Humboldt State by joining a committee and having student voices be heard!
Enthusiastically,
Sofia Pereira Associated Students President
