in Recognition of Veterans as a Cultural Community on Campus, and in Support of
Efforts to Ensure Humboldt State University is a Safe and Friendly Learning
Environment for Student Veterans, Active Duty Service Members and Military
Family Members 1.) WHEREAS,
The Mission Statement of
the Associated Students of Humboldt State University states, "The
Associated Students…[shall] assist in the protection of the rights and interests
of the individual student and the student body; provide services and programs
as deemed necessary by the corporation to meet the needs of the students and
campus community; and to stimulate the educational, social, physical, and
cultural well-being of the University community"; and, 2.) WHEREAS,
The
Associated Students of Humboldt State University supports and values diversity
while upholding a commitment to commend and partake in acts of social justice
that educate the campus and community on issues of diversity; and 3.) WHEREAS, HSU President Rollin Richmond said in his inauguration address, “Multicultural views of disciplines, including some scientific disciplines, have brought the realization that most of us teach and learn within cultural settings that may influence and sometimes badly distort our perceptions. Moreover, a diverse set of cultural perspectives has demonstrated clearly that students learn in different ways, and if we wish to help student learn well, we need to be well aware of these differences in learning styles;” and 4.) WHEREAS, The Associated Students of Humboldt State University (HSU) recognize veterans as a cultural community on campus; and 5.) WHEREAS, The
Associated Students recognize that military members and veterans return home to
every community, including our own, and that it is the responsibility of all communities
to assist in meeting the needs of returning service members; and 6.) WHEREAS, The
Associated Students recognize that the veteran community is susceptible to
harmful negative stereotypes that exist as obstacles to creating a safe
learning environment and the ability for service members to transition from
military life to civilian and/or student life; and 7.) WHEREAS, The
Associated Students acknowledge the additional unique challenges facing the
veteran community including physical, emotional mental and spiritual barriers;
therefore be it; 8.) RESOLVED, The
Associated Students of Humboldt State wish to provide the means for all students
to be free from discrimination and harmful stereotypes and to support diversity
and social justice efforts; and be it further 9.) RESOLVED, The Associated Students call upon the HSU campus
community to take action to ensure that the HSU campus is a safe and friendly
learning environment for veterans and the service member community; and be it
further 10.) RESOLVED, The Associated Students will support efforts to recognize and support veterans, service members and military families as a cultural community on campus; and be it finally 11.) RESOLVED, This
resolution shall be sent to, but not limited to: CSU Chancellor Charles Reed,
All members of the CSU Board of Trustees; HSU President Rollin Richmond; Vice President
