Help & Information

How the Book Exchange Works

The Humboldt State AS Book Exchange allows students post their textbooks and copy packets for sale. When you sign up for an account with the AS book exchange, you can post your books for sale and browse books that other students at HSU are selling.

Buying a book

When you have found a book that you would like to purchase, click on the “Contact Seller” button at the bottom of the page. You can then specify where and when you would like to exchange the book. Select that you are interested in buying the book.

TIP: Pick an easy exchange point that most people should know, such as the front of the library or at the UC Quad clock tower.

You can also ask the seller a question by clicking on the “Contact Seller” button, writing a question in the questions/comments area, and selecting that you would just like to ask the seller a question.

If you request to buy a book, an email will be sent to the seller with your email address, comments, and optionally, your phone number. We ask that the seller respond to your email as soon as possible, however we can not guarantee that they will do so. After this, it is the seller's responsibility to contact you and the AS book exchange has no further involvement. If you do not hear from the seller in a few days, you should contact them (the seller's email address will be sent to you in an email when you request a book). If the seller still does not contact you, please email us.

Selling A Book:

Listing your book for sale is simple. Just select the “My Book Listings” on the menu, click the “Add A New Listing” link, and fill out the form.

While having books listed on the AS Book Exchange, you must check your email for requests every day! It's important that you respond to buyers as soon as possible.

TIP: If you use your HSU email account, you will receive Book exchange messages instantly. If you use another email address, it could take a few hours.

When filling out the form, make sure you check the drop down list for classes and instructors BEFORE adding a new one. If you add a new instructor, make sure you spell their last name correctly. When adding a new class, make sure you spell it correctly and use the full name, as it appears in WebReg, not just the abbreviation.

Example for Instructor:
McHugh
(Not Jim McHugh, or McHugh Jim, or MCHUGH)

Example for Class:
Western Civilization to 1650
(Not Western Civ or Hist 104)

Bookstore's Used Price, Publisher, ISBN and Additional Notes are optional but can be useful if you have that information.

When you click “Add This Listing”, your book will be immediately available on the website.

What if my book doesn't sell? Am I stuck with it?

It's common for people to list their textbooks at the end of one semester not to have them sell until the beginning of the next semester. Be patient, most students dont know what textbooks they need until the bookstore lists them. You can keep your listing on as long as you like, so long as you still own the book.

If your book still doesn't sell, you can always try to sell it back to the bookstore, although for each semester that passes, there is less of a chance that they will buy it back.

But your best option, if your book doesn't sell, is to list it on a national used book service, such as Amazon.com's Marketplace, where it is very likely to sell. Amazon does charge a comission when the book sells.

Moderating:

At least once a day, a moderator for the AS Book Exchange will go through all the listings to make sure all the rules are being followed and the service is not being abused. We reserve the right to modify or remove any listing or user.

Rules:

  • You must be an HSU student, faculty, or staff member to use this service. If we find this rule being abused, we may only allow HSU email addresses to be used for the AS Book Exchange.
  • You may only list books used for HSU courses. Copy packets are OK.
  • You must list the edition of the book in your listing.

Use At Your Own Risk:

It is up to you to determine weather the text book you wish to buy will be useful to you next semester. It's a good idea to check into it. Many classes require you to have the same edition as in the bookstore. Sometimes, it may be OK to use an older edition than the one that the bookstore has. It's up to you to do the research.

TIP: Contact your professor to find out if the edition you would like to buy can be used for the particular class.

Legal Mumbo-Jumbo: We (Associated Students, the web designer, and Humboldt State University ) assume no responsibility for how the AS Book Exchange site is used. A request to buy a book is simply a request. It does not hold the seller responsible for honoring the request. We provide a listing service that is constantly under development and can have computer glitches or bugs that can result in a loss or modification of data or information. We are not responsible for any loss or modification of data on the Book Exchange Website. The information on this page is subject to cahnge at any time without notice.
