Burt Nordstrom, Executive Director of the University Center, introduced guests from Oaxaca, Carlos Robles and Pedro Gaytan, who are interested in developing a non-profit entity.
President’s Report
President Richmond reported on his presentation with Chancellor Reed and others at the August 28 California Institute for Regenerative Medicine meeting regarding the development of the California stem cell industry.
He also shared information discussed at the August 29-30 CSU Executive Council meeting. Some of the topics included:
- November 29-30 workshop for athletic directors; February 21 athletics workshop for presidents
- adherence to annual leave accumulation policy
- enrollment – 2007/08 targets will be revisited prior to the November CSU Board of Trustee meeting
- demand for nursing doctorates and hospital funding
- draft 2007/08 budget
- Town and Gown event – October 12 in Davis
- College Counseling Corps
- Status of Ed.D. (HSU is in the 2nd launch phase, 2009)
- Technology update
- Schedule of audits
- Housing – existing vs. new construction
- Lottery budget
- Calendar of events – outreach/external relations/communication and advocacy

Other reports
Vice President Gunsalus reported:
- that his office is processing a substantial gift received from an emeritus faculty member.
Provost Vrem reported:
- that WASC teams are being developed to address the two main WASC themes.
- that an Academic Affairs committee is meeting to discuss and make recommendations on the Behavioral and Social Sciences building space issues.
- that 16 English teachers fro Ecuador are currently taking intensive English language classes at HSU
- that he, along with Steve Butler, Rees Hughes and Jená Burges, have been discussing the implementation of a program which would identify students early in the semester who may benefit from academic intervention.
Anna Kircher reported:
- that she is obtaining information regarding the northern California gap in offshore telecommunications infrastructure that supports high-bandwidth oceanographic research and data gather.
- that her area is preparing for the Disaster Recovery Audit and the planned disaster drill. She will be contacting the office of the CSU General Counsel prior to finalizing contract agreements relating to emergency equipment.
Veteran’s Initiative – Update
Cai Williams, Director of the Veterans Upward Bound program, and others discussed their outreach efforts. The need for a general policy, including the updating of HSU’s CLEP exam policy, was strongly recommended. Cai Williams, Kim Hall, Milt Boyd, Scott Hagg and Danny Lawson will be invited to an early November University Executive Committee meeting to provide an update.

The earthquake drill agenda item will be scheduled for discussion at a later meeting.
