Subject: Administrative Changes

I summarize below a series of administrative changes that are underway on our campus.

The position of vice president for university advancement has been filled. Dr. Robert Gunsalus, currently at Trinity University in San Antonio, has accepted the position and will assume his new duties in mid June. Dr. Gunsalus will oversee the HSU Advancement Foundation that Interim Vice President Burt Nordstrom and our Sponsored Programs Foundation Board created last year.

Other important administrative searches underway include the positions of vice provost, dean of research and graduate studies, dean of the college of arts, humanities and social sciences, associate vice president of enrollment management and the chief information technology officer. Many of these positions are open as a result of recent retirements. The provost has appointed Dr. Steven Smith to serve as the interim vice provost, and he has taken steps to strengthen both the Sponsored Programs Foundation by the recent appointment of Dr. Chris Hopper as the interim director and Information Technology Services by the appointment of Ann Burroughs as the interim chief information technology officer.

The Office of Enrollment Management has been reporting to the President since September 2004. Ms. Jean Butler’s leadership of this group has resulted in significant improvements for which I am most grateful. I have asked Vice President Steven Butler to assume the supervisory responsibilities for Enrollment Management, including the departments of Admissions, Financial Aid and the Registrar.

I have asked Professor Ken Ayoob to assume the responsibility of chairing our restructured Enrollment Management Advisory Committee (EMAC). The EMAC, with its representative membership, will report to me and will continue its focus on reaching our enrollment targets. The recommendations from both the Strategic Enrollment Effort (SEE) committees and Noel/Levitz, which I support, are summarized in a letter which can be viewed at http://www.humboldt.edu/~hsupres/SEE/index.html. I have asked Dr. Butler to meet regularly with Provost Vrem, Dr. Ayoob and the EMAC to ensure that we collaborate effectively to increase enrollment and retention.

In addition, Student Academic Services Outreach (SASOP) will move to Student Affairs in an effort to consolidate complimentary programs and to provide cohesive leadership in support of building a diverse student body at HSU. We will effect these organizational shifts throughout the spring as we complete the search for a new associate vice president for enrollment management.

I very much appreciate the hard work that many faculty and staff are doing to improve student recruitment and retention; we are making progress.
