11th Annual Diversity Conference

Dear Students and Colleagues:

As an evolutionary biologist, one of the lessons learned early is the importance of genetic diversity for the adaptation of populations. Social scientists have argued that the same principle applies to social systems. Those that encourage and protect diversity are more likely to survive and prosper over the long term. Humboldt State University struggles to become a more diverse society both in terms of the ethnic origins of its people and the perspectives that they espouse. We all need to develop an appreciation for the diversity that increasingly characterizes our world and especially our state. One good way to acquire and strengthen your understanding of cultural diversity is to attend the Diversity Conference that will be held on our campus on March 4 and 5.

The Diversity Conference has been organized by two of our students, Mss. Aunjelique Meraz and Brandi Miller. The theme they have chosen this year is "Turn the Power Off: Reconstructing History, Deconstructing Media, Constructing Change." The conference will examine the role of education and the media in creating our understanding of American history. The organizers have arranged some great edu-tainment for us in the form of Faces of America which will perform at 7PM in the Kate Buchanan Room on Friday, March 4. On Saturday, March 5, a series of workshops is planned and will conclude with a keynote address by Keith Boykin who served as a White House media consultant.

For me an appreciation and understanding of the importance of diversity is a basic aspect of the value of fairness. I hope you will find the time to explore the perspectives that our two students have arranged for us.

Sincerely,

Rollin C. Richmond, President
