Message for Campus - re: Dialogue on Race
Campus Community,
For our annual Dialogue on Race, a number of HSU students, faculty, staff and community members have joined together to offer many opportunities for us to reflect on racism and social justice issues during the period of November 1 to November 11. As we strive to honor diversity on our campus and in our community, I hope that all of us will take the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of race and racism, to renew our commitment to an inclusive society, and to make a commitment to personal and institutional change.
During the two-week period of Nov. 1 to Nov. 11, there will be a great variety of keynote addresses, experiential workshops, films and public events, all focusing on the meaning of race in our society. A schedule is available at http://www.humboldt.edu/~humboldt/dsjcalendar/dialogue.html. Keynote speaker Ruth Gilmore will address the relationship between racism and the growth and development of what some have called the prison industrial complex. Keynote speaker Tim Wise is a prominent activist and writer about white privilege. The "Tunnel of Oppression" and Small Group Dialogue on Race both offer wonderful opportunities to develop a greater awareness of social justice and diversity issues. In addition, students, faculty, staff and community members have organized many thoughtful workshops on a variety of issues related to the theme of the Dialogue.
We are committed to creating a campus and a community that is inclusive. A deep exploration of racism and the many ways in which it has affected our personal lives, as well as our educational system and the other institutions of our society, are essential elements of our commitment. I urge you to take this commitment to heart by attending as many of these events as you can, and participating with an open heart and mind.
Sincerely,
Helen Jones
