Graduation Pledge

Graduate, On behalf of the Graduation Pledge Alliance and Humboldt State University we would like to congratulate your upcoming graduation! Your accomplishments are recognized and commended, and we hope that your time at Humboldt State University has provided you with ample opportunity to develop yourself as a critically conscious active thinker and an effective actor for change. In these final busy days prior to commencement we would like to personally invite you to become a part of a Humboldt State University legacy, started nearly two decades ago by committed students much like yourself, a legacy deeply rooted here at HSU that has far reaching branches, flourishing at universities across the nation and world. The Graduation Pledge Alliance (GPA) was started in 1987 by Humboldt State students who recognized the importance of personal choices, and the lasting effects of the resulting actions. These forward thinking students created a pledge that stands as a statement of the values and ideals we all must consider as we embark upon our own personal professional paths. The wording of the pledge is as follows:

  • I pledge to explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider and will try to improve these aspects of any organizations for which I work.

The purpose of the pledge is not to limit the potential job choices that exist for graduates, but rather to spark a conscious thought process that allows one to see the potential for proactive change that exists within any job opportunity. Taking the pledge is a personal statement, one that will never be monitored or judged by anyone other than ourselves. Becoming a part of the Graduation Pledge Alliance is relatively simple. First, we invite you to educate yourself about the pledge by visiting our website at www.humboldt.edu/~hsuas/gpa or by visiting the national pledge site at www.graduationpledge.org.

If you feel that the pledge is a personal statement that you agree with and wish to support, visit a pledge advocate in the HSU bookstore during finals week from 11 am to 1 pm daily, or outside the west gym entrance of Forbes Complex on commencement day. More information, pledge cards for you to sign and keep, lapel pins and statement ribbons are all available for you at the GPA table. Again, we wish to congratulate you on your wonderful accomplishments, and we look forward to seeing you on commencement day where we hope that you will show your support for the Graduation Pledge Alliance, a H.S.U. legacy we are all very proud to support and invite you to become a part of!

Best Wishes,

Rollin C. Richmond, President
