President’s Report
President Richmond reported:
- that a recent recruitment publication prepared by April Guntle (Graphic Services) and Vernon Felton (Public Affairs) is very impressive and they are to be commended.
- that the March 3-4 Diversity Conference includes a 1:00-5:00 session for faculty, staff and administrators
- on items discussed at the December 13-14 CSU Executive Committee meeting:
- the Chancellor’s office is providing funding for campuses to coordinate visits by PIQE representatives (Parents Institute for Quality Education); they will visit on February 13 and 14.
- reserve balances, especially extended education funds; it may be useful to use some funds as a faculty incentive to develop on-line courses. It was suggested that a campus policy be developed regarding the development of on-line courses.
- police staffing levels
- funding from summer camps
- Lotto funds
- GE requirements
- ffaculty diversity
- Electronic data retention; Ann Burroughs will prepare a draft campus policy for University Executive Committee/Academic Senate review.
- Avian Pandemic Influenza – Rebecca Staufer will be asked to convene a group (to also include Carol Terry and Dave Bugbee) to discuss a draft plan for HSU with the vice presidents, followed by University Executive Committee discussion. It was suggested they review the plan already developed by CSU Northridge.
- Trademarking of campus name – Denice Helwig and Burt Nordstrom will bring a recommendation to the University Executive Committee.
- President Richmond is attending a meeting on January 11 regarding enrollments in the Los Angeles Basin.
Other reports
Steve Butler reported:
- Orientation for transfer and freshmen students is occurring on January 12 and 13.
- The new interim director of the Student Disability Resource Center, Ward Newmeyer, started this week. A national search will be commenced at a later date.
Power Outage
- Police Chief Tom Dewey, Sergeant Mary Dezern, Elizabeth Hans McCrone (Manager, KHSU) and Kevin Sanders (Engineer, KHSU) attended the meeting to discuss the recent storm and power outage. Some of KHSU’s areas of concern included:
- lack of emergency lighting in the Theatre Arts building for a period of time
- lost transmitter connection at Kneeland, with no back-up system available
Other options are being explored:
- purchasing a generator (could broadcast at full, instead of low, power) – would need to maintain it which may be difficult during a significant emergency if roads are impassable. A campaign is underway, with approximately one-third of the generator cost being raised to date.
- connect to Miller Broadcasting’s back-up generator on Kneeland (a complicated, expensive process, resulting in low power broadcasting)
- auxiliary FCC license, permitting transmission from campus (at a lower power)
- coordinating with other local agencies, such as Caltrans
- a satellite delivery system
KHSU plans to develop an emergency response team and protocol.
Improved use of the HSU information telephone number (826-4636) was discussed; it was suggested that magnets be distributed reminding employees of the number to call to determine the campus status during an emergency. Chief Dewey and Jane Rogers will update the University Executive Committee in late February on a plan for maintaining the information line. The flow of information during out-of-the-ordinary events will be discussed further by the committee, as well.
Other concerns included:
- refrigerated faculty research was in jeopardy, as there was no generator
- police communications were impacted due to not having a generator
Carl Coffey will be asked to have all generators and campus generator needs evaluated for discussion with the University Executive Committee.
It was suggested that a message be shared with the campus updating them on the campus storm damage, information access, and being prepared for future events, both at home and work. Denice will work with Paul Mann in preparing a message.
