President’s Report
Budget
President Richmond distributed preliminary 2008-09 budget information, based on the Governor’s proposed budget announced on January 10, which includes a $312.9 million cut to the CSU budget. Even though changes may be made to the budget, HSU will proceed with planning for the 2008-09 year, based on the January 10 Governor’s budget plan. A letter updating the HSU campus will be distributed in the upcoming weeks, with ongoing updates planned throughout the semester. He further noted that it is not known at this time if the CFA contract will be honored.
Committees – Student Participation
He reminded members of the University Executive Committee to review the status of their committees, as requested by Terra Rentz, President of Associated Students, at the December 13 University Executive Committee. (Notes from that meeting follow):
- each division review the status of the committees within their areas to determine if they are active, as well as noting updates in committee description, charge and membership. The committee handbook used by AS may be viewed at http://www.humboldt.edu/~hsuas/files/handbook2007.doc
- each division prepare a master calendar of meetings to be shared with Associated Students early in the Spring Semester (including subcommittees and ad hoc committees).
- identify, for each committee, the mechanism (and/or contact person) for requesting that an item be placed on an agenda.
This item will be discussed again at the January 24 University Executive Committee meeting.
CSU Mentor Program – Professional Science Master’s Program
President Richmond expressed his interest in HSU being involved in the Professional Science Master’s Program, and offered his assistance in exploring the feasibility of this opportunity at HSU.
Overview of Enrollment and the Consequences of the Restrictions on Enrollment Recently set by the Chancellor’s Office
Mike Reilly, Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management, reviewed CSU Coded Memorandum AA-2008-05 relating to the CSU budget and enrollment management, noting that the biggest concern is the restriction on lower division transfer applicants. AVP Reilly will be attending a meeting with CSU representatives in the near future, where it is expected that clarification will be provided. Members of the University Executive Committee discussed their concerns, as well as possible plans for planning and managing HSU’s enrollment. This item will be discussed further at the January 24 University Executive Committee meeting.
Other Reports
Vice President Butler reported:
- the Humboldt Orientation Program is taking place this week, with a number of transfer student “walk-ins” participating.
- the new housing project, anticipated to receive final CSU Board of Trustees approval in March, is on schedule with a planned occupancy in Fall 2010.
Mark Larson, Senate Chair, reported:
- the Academic Senate will be considering a number of resolutions, as well as discussing key issues, such as discontinuance of the German program. The ad hoc budget review committee plans to make a presentation to the Senate on January 29.
- that the University may want to consider expanding the program prioritization to include a campus-wide viewpoint, instead of just academics.
- he will be participating in the CSU Fresno Summer Arts program, which occurs between June 13-July 26, 2008.
Identification Cards – Update
Vice President Butler shared information relating to the emergency identification cards which will be issued to appropriate campus emergency responders. He will send additional details to divisions in the near future and this item will be discussed again at the January 31 meeting.
2007-2008 Budget Update
Carol Terry, Associate Vice President, Business Services, distributed and discussed budget summaries as of December, 2007. She noted that an additional “projection” column will be added to future reports.
