President’s Report
President Richmond reported:
- that he is serving on the CSU Audit Committee and 2006/07 audit recommendations will be submitted to the Board of Trustees for approval.
- that a reception was held recently, attended by Mark Quinn and Mary Wollesen from the SBA and others, to celebrate the award of the SBA lead center to HSU.
- a recent meeting of the Plaza Group was held. The Arcata City Council is planning a study session on February 15.
Other Reports
Vice President Nordstrom reported:
- Ken Fisher will be visiting HSU on February 3; a press conference is planned in the Library at 1:15.
Vice President Vrem reported:
- that the Watson Lecture is planned for February 6, 4:00-5:30 in the Kate Buchanan Room featuring an address by Michael Crooke, first CEO of Revolution Living and former head of the Patagonia outdoor equipment company.
Ann Burroughs reported:
- that the first meeting of the ad hoc ITS Advisory group is scheduled for Monday, January 30.
Carol Terry reported:
- that she will present investment strategies to the University Executive Committee.
Vice President Coffey reported:
- that a consultant has been hired to provide performance evaluation training at HSU on February 13, 14, 15 which will include a session for employees to learn about the process, in addition to sessions for supervisors. A letter will be sent from President Richmond notifying the campus.
Saeed Mortazavi reported:
- that some of the items included in the January 24 Senate meeting included a resolution setting term limits for the senate chair which failed, a presentation on the Pilot GE Survey Results and an Athletics presentation from Dan Collen and Jeff Borgeld.
- that the formation of a Presidential task force to review the structure of campus committees, with a specified completion date, be considered.
Helen Jones reported:
- that the North Coast Education Summit is occurring on February 2-5, with a reception announcing the Diversity Plan Action Council planned for February 3, 4:00-5:30.
- there is a workshop planned on compassionate listening during the January 28 weekend.
- that almost all HSU supervisors have completed the required CSU sexual harassment training.
- that amendments are being made to the University Code of Rules and Regulations (available on the University Police home page).
Vice President Butler reported:
- that the new Director for the Student Disability Resources is determining the unfunded expenditures associated with accommodating students with disabilities. He noted that interpreters are needed.
- that he attended the Arcata Liaison meeting where they reviewed the emergency procedures, following up on the recent wind/rain storm. He noted that a large-scale emergency exercise is planned at HSU during Fall 2006.
- that the participation by administrators in shadowing students is appreciated and a follow-up discussion will be scheduled.
- HSU has received significant coverage recently, with Fred Hooks being included in recent NCAA material, as well as HSU faculty being displayed on service learning documentation from the Chancellor’s Office.
- an MPP search will be implemented for a permanent Chief of Police.
- that HSU WUI applicants from Oregon may be expected due to their increase in fees. It was suggested that faculty and administrators receive a summary of WUI requirements, possibly at a President’s Council meeting.
Budget
Carol Terry reviewed Funding Assumptions for Salary Increases per bargained agreements FY 05-06 and FY 06-07.
- the salary increase for vacant positions is not included in funding assumptions
- salary increases for in-range progressions are included in the assumptions
- the assumptions do not include increases for summer salaries
Provost Vrem recommended applying base budget funds to base budget increases and looking for other funds to cover the one time expenditures.
Provost Vrem and Carol Terry will meet and present a plan to the University Executive Committee at the February 2 meeting, after which the funds will be distributed.
Saeed Mortazavi requested that President Richmond look into market equity adjustments for faculty. Dr. Mortazavi was encouraged to work with Provost Vrem and Carol Terry in providing President Richmond with data.
Update on Financial Aid and the Cash for College Program
Kim Coughlin-Lamphear, Interim Financial Aid Director, provided an update:
- The Cash for College program was worthwhile and will be continued next year.
- Some of the changes in the Financial Aid area include:
- staff have been reorganized to better serve students
- improved communication with contact information being made available to students via business cards
- cross-training/streamlining
- expanded open hours (8:00 AM to 5:00 PM) with walk-in advising available (9:00AM to 4:00PM)
- professional development for staff
- increased work study
- surveying of walk-in students regarding services provided, with a survey of all students planned in the future
- new improved web site with plans to improve the scholarship web site
