President’s Report

President Richmond introduced Dr. Glen Toney, CSU Trustee member, who is visiting campus and participating in the WASC site team visit. An open discussion followed, with University Executive Committee members sharing concerns regarding campus funding being based on enrollment, without taking the unique qualities that campuses offer into consideration. Professor John Powell, with the consent of Dr. Toney, will prepare a briefing paper for the Trustee (which will be reviewed by the University Executive Committee and the Provost’s Council prior to being submitted).

President Richmond reported that he approved the inclusion of HSU in support of a presidential debate on science and technology http://www.sciencedebate2008.com/www/index.php?id=7#8.

He reminded the University Executive Committee of the importance of referring to staff members who are Administrative Support Coordinators as such and discouraging the use of the term “secretary” that some people view as derogatory.

He will be attending the CSU Capitol Hill Day in Washington, D.C. on March 5 where he will be speaking with legislators about funding of CSU initiatives (the Veterans Initiative, the Agricultural Research Initiative, and the CSU Marine Equipment and Infrastructure Initiative).

He and the vice presidents are discussing plans for the 2008-09 budget. A campus letter from the President, Senate Chair and the California Faculty Association encouraging faculty and staff to communicate with legislatures about the budget situation will be forthcoming.

President Richmond, at the invitation of the Eureka Sister City group, is accompanying them to New Zealand on an education-focused visit.

Emergency Management

Chief Dewey and Jan Marnell shared an overview of HSU’s emergency management plan, stressing that it’s a campus-wide effort.
