Dr. Mackie shared information about the Mellon Foundation’s Research in Information Technology program. He noted that their recent award to HSU’s Moodle project was the first of 10 awardees selected from over 300 nominations, as it demonstrated the spirit they are attempting to create throughout higher education.
Theresa (Tere) Mendoza, Senior Advisor, CSU Campus Advancement Program
Tere Mendoza discussed her role as the Senior Advisor of CSU’s Campus Advancement Program, and how she may be of assistance to HSU.
President’s Report
President Richmond reported:
- that he had an enjoyable visit with Leslie McBee, coordinated by Rebecca Anderson from HSU’s Career Center. He is a Diplomat in Residence at UC Berkeley. According to Berkeley’s web site, he was a Consul General for the south of France, Corsica, and Monaco and is talent-scouting for the U.S. Department of State in an effort to recruit a new generation of foreign policy professionals.
- that he attended the February 7 Arcata City Council meeting where some of the topics discussed included an alcohol service fee which would provide additional funding for policing on the plaza; recommendations of consultant, Dan Monez, relating to employee health and safety issues (site security survey); and the Arcata Endeavor’s lease extension.
- Margaret Davidson, Director of NOAA Coastal Services Center, will be the 2007 Commencement guest speaker. Plans are underway to prepare for her visit, as well as that of Sam Schuchat, Executive Officer, California State Coastal Conservancy, who will also be visiting HSU at that time.
- Plans are being developed for the February 26 “Access to Excellence” strategic planning conversation at HSU. A systemwide summit will take place in Southern California on April 24-25 which will include a delegation from HSU. HSU’s delegation will be discussed at the February 22 University Executive Committee meeting.
- that he has recently visited with two impressive faculty members, Wayne Knight and David Scheerer, and he plans to make time available to have similar visits with other faculty.
Other Reports
Provost Vrem reported:
- that the provost and director of international programs from Northern Arizona University will be visiting HSU on February 23 to discuss the 1 + 2 + 1 program.
Vice President Gunsalus reported:
- that the process for creating new scholarships has been streamlined, with 23 new scholarships being processed which will be distributed (worth approximately $80,000). The Bill Jackson Memorial Scholarship has reached an endowment level of $25,000.
- that the Stater magazine has been redesigned and will be called the “Humboldt Magazine.”
Vice President Coffey reported:
- the site approval for the new housing project is moving forward and will be discussed at the March CSU Board of Trustees’ meeting.
Associate Vice President Reilly reported:
- that October 12 and 13 are tentatively planned for 2007 Homecoming activities.
- that a breakfast with local landlords is planned in an effort to coordinate off-campus housing for students.
- that five well-attended recruiting receptions were recently held. Approximately 175 prospective students joined the February 7 “Living on Campus” Chat Event.
Web Accessibility Policy
The draft web accessibility policy, discussed at the February 1 University Executive Committee meeting, will be distributed electronically to University Executive Committee members, with comments being forwarded to Anna Kircher by February 12. It will then be forwarded to Senate for input.
