President’s Report

The Academic Senate is working on a campus distance education policy. Carol Terry noted the importance of taking the fee structure into consideration.
- that he, Suzanne Burcell, Jacquelyn Bolman, and Marlon Sherman will be attending the CSU event, “The Challenge of Higher Education in Indian Communities” in Sacramento on March 21. He has solicited input from the Native American Advisory Council members.
- that he recently attended a CHESS alumni event (California Higher Education Student Summit) in Sacramento. He also had an opportunity to meet with some of HSU’s successful alumni, Gretchen Kinney Newsom, Manolo Platin, Amelia Patrick, and Caitlin Gill.
- that he will be attending interviews at San Diego State University on April 10, as chair of the CSUPERB Executive Director search committee.
Other reports
Vice President Coffey reported:
- that the final piece of structural steel is being placed in the Behavioral and Social Science building today.
- that there will be a significant disruption on L.K. Wood Boulevard during the summer months, as the city replaces water lines.
- that the staff parking lot off of L.K. Wood Boulevard is currently closed due to HSU’s lighting project.
Randi Darnall-Burke reported:
- that the Student Disability Resource Center is taking steps to accommodate HSU’s deaf student (a budget augmentation of approximately $36,000-$40,000 is needed this semester). Two to three additional deaf students are anticipated at HSU beginning in the fall semester. SDRC staff are working to finalize accommodations for next year.
Saeed Mortazavi reported:
- that the Academic Senate will be proposing a resolution this month regarding a university-wide faculty evaluation, which would be processed centrally. Rick Vrem and Ann Burroughs will discuss what measures will need to be taken to assist this process.
Carol Terry reported:
- that a proposal is being considered which would result in campuses being permitted to retain fees collected on campus. If approved by the legislature, this would become effective July 1, 2006; Carol will provide additional information at a later date.
Helen Jones reported:
- that the Diversity Plan Action Council task groups are meeting, with progress being made.
Ann Burroughs reported:
- that the server is being overloaded by bulk e-mail messages; ITS is attempting to manage these messages (by scheduling them for release during the non-business hours).

- that she will be working on a model for telecommunication recharges.
- that HSU’s television production capabilities are not being fully utilized.

Diversity Funding Committee
Helen Jones provided an overview of the diversity program funding committee initiatives during 2004/05 followed by a discussion of the purpose of the funds as outlined in Executive Memorandum P03-06. Recommendations were reviewed and it was decided that Vice President Butler and Randi Darnall Burke will present the MultiCultural Center budget to the University Executive Committee at an upcoming meeting (with a review of how Associated Student/Housing funds are being spent).

Provost Vrem requested input regarding changes to the WASC proposal (http://www.humboldt.edu/~aavp/wascindex.htm), mostly to section 5 (Approach for Educational Effectiveness Review). The proposal will be resubmitted on March 15.
