  • President Richmond will prepare a draft common vision for vice president review, followed by discussion with the campus community
  • President Richmond and Jená Burgess will discuss the possibility of acquiring the services of an outside facilitator to assist with a comprehensive analysis and revision of our decentralized budget planning and management processes
  • Regular updates of the action items (to the University Executive Committee) will be important
  • Greg Crawford, Rollin Richmond, Denice Helwig and Jená Burges will draft a timeline, identifying those responsible for the action items, to be presented to the University Executive Committee

President’s Report

The CSU Access to Excellence revised draft http://www.calstate.edu/acadaff/System_Strategic_Planning/draft-revised.shtml was discussed and it was recommended that the CSU be encouraged to examine their funding model for allocating budgets to the campuses.

President Richmond discussed the Common Management System (CMS) and his plan to request a one-year extension of the student module implementation.

President Richmond and Jim Howard, Dean, College of Natural Resources and Sciences recently visited with the Executive Director and other members of the California Coastal Conservancy regarding funding possibilities. The Coastal Conservancy expressed an interest in identifying the North Coast as a marine protection area.

Doyle Williams and Sanjay Varshney visited campus recently to review the Business Program, offering useful recommendations.

Other Reports

Vice President Gunsalus reported:

  • posters have been printed announcing the HSU Commencement which is occurring on May 17 http://www.humboldt.edu/~grad/. He requested that speakers limit their speeches to three minutes.
  • letters have been sent as part of the CSU e-advocacy system
  • a record number of alumni have made gifts to HSU this past year

Dean Wang reported:

  • a reception is planned on March 27 for the Learning Commons computer lab

Senate Chair Larson reported:

  • a response to the Budget Review Task Force recommendations will take place at the April 1 Senate meeting, as well as a response to President Richmond’s budget proposal. Discontinuation of the German Program will be discussed at the April 15 meeting.

Vice President Butler reported:

  • the tsunami drill took place on March 26
  • federal legislation may impact the university’s emergency notification process (resulting in the installation of an audible alarm which could be heard campuswide)
  • the annual Athletic Auction is taking place on March 29
  • the CSU is requiring campuses to participate in active shooter training (HSU University Police is already doing this)
  • Preview is taking place on April 11 and 12, as is the California Big Time and Social Gathering event

First Year Student Requirement for a FIG Course

The requirement of a FIG (Freshmen Interest Group) course was discussed and it was noted that this may be an option, as WASC and HSU’s institutional goals are considered. It was suggested that life skills (personal finance, information competency, health and wellness) be incorporated into curricular discussions.

General Education Reform

This item, like the FIG Course, would be part of a broader WASC-related conversation. President Richmond will consider requesting that general education reform be discussed by the CSU Executive Council.
