President’s Report

President Richmond:

  • shared an article, A Different Way to Fight Student Disengagement, published by Inside Higher Ed. He will ask the Academic Senate to review this issue and possibly revise their guidelines for service learning courses. He encouraged others to read the article, http://insidehighered.com/layout/set/print/views/2008/04/15/harward.
  • recently attended meetings of the Black Student Union and Brothers United.
  • requested that Randi check with Vice President Butler and Chief Dewey regarding the status of the emergency ID cards.
  • requested that CMS (Common Management System) and CCRP (California Center for Rural Policy) updates be included on the May 2 President’s Council meeting agenda.
  • plans to delay the Provost search until Fall 2009 (with a new provost starting in summer 2010), following the program prioritization process.
  • requested the status of the letter to the Chancellor’s Office requesting an extension of the timeline for HSU’s implementation of the PeopleSoft Campus Solutions product.
  • reported that he, along with Steve Butler and Anna Kircher, recently met with several students who proposed the installation of software in the CNRS computer labs which will alert students regarding their paper usage. It was noted that in excess of seven million pieces of paper are used each year at HSU (in the interdisciplinary labs).

Other Reports

Vice President Gunsalus reported:

  • the Distinguished Alumni awards banquet is occurring on Friday, April 18.

Senate Chair Larson reported:

  • the Outstanding Professor event honoring Professor Carolyn Ward is scheduled on Tuesday, April 29 (6:15 lecture; 7:00 dinner).
  • he received a summary of issues being addressed by the Statewide Academic Senate, which he will distribute.
  • that he, along with other members of the Senate Executive Committee, met with President Richmond recently to follow-up on various issues of concern and to suggest possible solutions.
  • a resolution was passed extending the timeline for the ad hoc committee to review department documents related to Appendix J criteria and standards (through 2008-09 academic year).
  • that discussion of the proposed discontinuance of the German Program will be continued at the April 29 Senate meeting.

Budget Update

Carol Terry distributed and reviewed a university budget summary as of March 2008, with no areas of concern being noted. Carol reported that HSU’s new Budget Director, Lee Lindsey, has started and will be invited to an upcoming University Executive Committee meeting for introduction.

Response to the Senate on the Budget Review Task Force’s Recommendations

President Richmond requested input for his response to the Academic Senate’s resolution on proposed changes to the HSU budget process. It was suggested that persons interested in serving on the University Budget Committee demonstrate a level of competency prior to being appointed.

Improving Communication with Faculty

President Richmond asked University Executive Committee (UEC) members to share pertinent information from the UEC meetings with their constituencies. He will also take steps to communicate more effectively with the campus community.
