Pandemic Flu - Update
Rebecca Stauffer and Tom Dewey reviewed the draft pandemic response plan (a business continuation plan) being prepared for HSU. Their committee will coordinate with the Public Affairs office in preparing a campus news release. The final plan is due at the Chancellor’s Office by May 31 and will be shared in the fall with the President’s Council.
President’s Report
President Richmond noted that HSU mentors will be identified for the new administrators arriving during the next few months.
He and Keion Morgan from HSU Admissions met with superintendents and principals from the southern California area on April 24 to promote HSU.
He reported that some of the topics discussed at the April 25/26 CSU Executive Council meeting included:
- Military recruiters on CSU campuses
- Assumption Program of Loans for Education; he will be meeting with others at HSU regarding these awards.
- GAAP audit
- Mary Cheng, CSU ITS Tech Advice and Policy, is assisting in the development of plans for universities in meeting the needs of the disabled.
- Veterans Education Opportunities Partnership; he will be meeting with others at HSU regarding this topic.
- President’s Council on Underserved Communities
- Parent’s Institute for Quality Education
- Initiative to increase math/science teachers
- Additional funds for nursing programs
- Special funding for digital media education
Athletic Director, Dan Collen, joined President Richmond and the CSU Executive Council on April 26. Former NCAA President, Cedric Dempsey, will be assisting the CSU with athletics-related topics (recruitment of coaches, training programs for new presidents/vice presidents/athletic directors, agreements with companies like Pepsi or Coke, equipment purchase, etc.). President Richmond suggested that HSU athletes, when participating in activities at the K-12 schools, encourage young people to consider college; there are posters outlining the steps to get into the CSU available (in several languages).
Fall Registration Update – Prospects for FTES in 06/07
President Richmond met with Chancellor Reed and Vice Chancellor West on April 24 to discuss HSU’s enrollment and its impact on our budget. We will be submitting a revised enrollment target to the CSU in May.
Scott Hagg and Jean Butler discussed registration/admission information, distributing an enrollment profile as of April 27 which reflected strong numbers in the “new student” and “transfer” categories. Provost Vrem will send an e-mail to continuing students urging them to register before classes are cancelled due to low enrollments. Carol Terry and Jean Butler will take steps to raise the level for a “hold” on student registration to $50.00 (to enable students to register, even if they have a “hold” of less than $50.00). Ginny Kelly, Director of the Advising Center, will be contacted to see if any action may be taken to assist continuing students with their registration needs.
