Staff Appreciation Day – Update

Kelly Mathson provided an overview of the upcoming May 5 Staff Appreciation Day being planned by the President’s Office staff.

President’s Report

Diversity Plan

Jyoti Rawal and Eric Rofes, co-chairs of the Diversity Plan Action Council, attended the meeting to discuss their May 2006 annual report. Saeed Mortazavi noted that time will be scheduled for the document to be reviewed by the Academic Senate during the Fall Semester.

This item will be placed on the May 11 University Executive Committee agenda to discuss summer action items. It will also be placed on the September President’s Council agenda.

Other Reports

Provost Vrem reported:

  • the 2007/08 academic calendar is being discussed with the Academic Senate; he will propose a voluntary start date of August 16, 2007 (August 17 is the official first day of the fall semester)

Vice President Nordstrom reported:

  • Linda Thompson has been appointed the new Bookstore Director, replacing Jon Greene who is retiring. Roberta Duggan will serve as Assistant Director.
  • The University Center Board approved a new retirement program for future University Center employees.

Jane Rogers reported:

  • that she attended a meeting with HSU and Northern Humboldt Union High School District representatives to discuss use of the Redwood Bowl for local high school graduation ceremonies. Due to construction at HSU, they will be held at College of the Redwoods this year.

Saeed Mortazavi reported:

  • the Senate will be discussing the Resolution on General University Policy on Distance Education at their May 9 meeting.

Helen Jones reported:

  • measures are being taken to stream the commencement ceremonies via the internet.

Ann Burroughs reported:

  • that in addition to commencement, there are many campus presentations that are not captioned. She will check with the Chancellor’s Office staff regarding the availability of software to check our web pages for disability compliance.

Budget – University Budget Committee 06/07 Recommendations

Rick Vrem and Saeed Mortazavi, co-chairs of the University Budget Committee, presented the 2006-2007 recommendations. President Richmond noted that HSU will be planning for budget cuts, for both the current year (05/06) and next (06/07) due to enrollment targets not being reached.

University Financial Update

Carol Terry reviewed reports reflecting the campus financial situation as of April 2006. Additional reports, including auxiliaries, and the process for allocating Lottery funds on campus will be discussed at the June 1 meeting.
