President’s Report

President Richmond:

  • distributed information which was provided to him by organizers of the 2008 Emergency Management and Homeland Security Summit held in Long Beach on June 9.
  • attended an ACE (American Council on Education) Summit, “Serving Those Who Serve: Higher Education and America’s Veterans.” He will convene a meeting soon to discuss how HSU can do more to assist veterans who are returning to school.
  • reported that CSUPERB (CSU Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology) is organizing two CIRM (California Institute for Regenerative Medicine http://www.cirm.ca.gov/) proposal writing workshops, one of which is scheduled to occur at HSU on Friday, July 11. There is $18M available to the CSU and community colleges and an RFP “Bridges to Stem Cell Research Awards” program sponsored by CIRM is expected.
  • reported that he and others from the Chancellor’s Office have been involved in an initiative to support coastal and ocean research and education, COAST (Council on Ocean Affairs, Science and Technology). This project has received support from other CSU campuses and the Chancellor, with the possibility of approximately $300,000 being generated for faculty research projects in 2008/09.
  • reported that in response to the WASC report, there have been preliminary discussions with possible consultants to assist the campus.
  • has been involved in discussions about the limited child care availability in our community. Jon Sapper, Humboldt County Office of Education, is in the process of coordinating a group to develop a business plan to address this issue.

Policy on Provision of Cell Phones to Emergency Employees

Carol Terry distributed a copy of a Wireless Device Policy Summary which was created as a result of the IRS tax code, as well as workload issues associated with management and accounting of the EOC wireless devices. A recommendation will be brought to the University Executive Committee for consideration at a later date.

Update on CMS/ITS Equipment Purchases

Melinda Haynes-Swank and Josh Callahan attended the meeting to provide an update on CMS/ITS equipment purchases which were necessary to support supplementary applications to the PeopleSoft product. This is a significant purchase on behalf of the university and its ongoing efforts to increase technology services on campus. The funds are coming from the CMS loan.

Other Reports

Vice President Butler reported:

  • orientation is occurring on campus with 230 freshmen expected (interested mostly in College of Natural Resources majors).

Anna Kircher reported:
