President’s Report

President Richmond attended a July 15 CSU Board of Trustees meeting where some of the topics discussed included:

  • Collective Bargaining – agreement has been reached with the APC’s (Academic Professionals of California, Unit 4) effective until July 2010. Discussions continue with SETC (State Employees Trades Council, Unit 6). Faculty members will receive a 2% salary increase effective with their July paycheck, with the possibility of a 0.5% merit increase which is dependent upon legislative action.
  • CSU Human Resources – they are providing training for campuses in an effort to reduce the number of grievances.
  • Five-year Capital Improvement Program – this was approved, however it is unlikely that funds will be available in the foreseeable future as a bond isn’t anticipated to be placed on the November ballot.
  • The Alliance for the CSU has been effective. They are requesting that e-mail messages be sent to the “Big 5” (Governor Schwarzenegger, Senate Pro Tem Perata, Assembly Speaker Bass, Assembly Republican leader Villines, and Senate Republican leader Cogdill). More information is available on their web site (http://www.allianceforthecsu.org/).
  • Year-end budgets -- all campuses closed their budgets on time; President Richmond commended HSU staff.
  • A proposed Title 5 revision addressing the appointment of athletic personnel to Management Personnel Plan (MPP) positions for a definite term was discussed.
  • Voluntary Self-Monitoring of Equal Opportunity in Athletics for Women Students was discussed. HSU meets all three requirements and President Richmond commended HSU staff.

President Richmond was recently appointed to the CSU Technology Steering Committee which met on July 15. They discussed the directions to be taken in the year ahead. Some of the topics included:

  • Academic Technology Agenda – development of a systemwide Learning Management System (LMS)
  • CMS Agenda – reducing the number of databases
  • Campus CIO (ITAC, Information Technology Advisory Committee) Agenda – Common LMS, Green Computing, Outsourcing of Student E-mail (Google)
  • Identity Management System

President Richmond recently met with HSU representatives to discuss services for veteran students and the status of the Veteran’s Center on campus which is expected to open on August 28.

Other Reports

Vice President Butler reported:

  • Humboldt Orientation is occurring this week, with 140 students participating (with a focus on majors within the Professional Studies and Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences colleges). It is anticipated that HSU’s target of 1150 freshmen for the fall semester will be reached with a total headcount of approximately 8,000 students.
  • Deputy Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy was in Arcata this week to discuss drug-related issues, including the impact of the grow houses on the university.

Vice President Gunsalus reported:

  • the number of alumni donors in 2007-08 totaled 4,335 compared to 1,976 in 2005-06.

Carol Terry:

  • distributed a summary of 2007-08 year-end budget balances.

Ray Wang:

  • provided an update on the Learning Commons and Internet Café project in the Library which is planned to be operational prior to the 2009 Spring Semester.

Zimbra Demonstration

Josh Callahan, Director of Central IT Systems and Services, and Thom O’Connor, Zimbra, provided a presentation about the Zimbra Collaboration Suite (e-mail, calendaring, on-line authoring tools).
