President’s Report
President Richmond reported:
- that he attended the NCAA President’s Summit on June 22-24, highlighting points of interest. (HSU is hosting the CCAA Executive Council on June 3-5, 2008).
- that he attended the June 25-27 CSU Executive Council retreat. Some of the discussion topics included:
- information technology
- MERLOT http://www.merlot.org/merlot/index.htm
- JOLT (Journal of Online Learning and Teaching) was also discussed. It was suggested that faculty recruitment material include a statement that the position requires the development of online courses.
- textbook pricing -- textbooks will be discussed at a fall semester meeting of the President’s Council; a pre-meeting to include Rollin Richmond, Steve Butler, Burt Nordstrom/Bookstore representative, Academic Affairs representative, Anna Kircher, Kevin O’Brien, and a librarian will be scheduled.
- Accountability and providing a web site for students to view comparative information about various universities. Jená Burges noted that HSU will administer the CLA (Collegiate Learning Assessment, http://www.cae.org/content/pdf/CLA.brochure.pdf) exam this year.
- Emergency management was discussed (the University Executive Committee will review HSU’s enhanced emergency notification process at a future meeting)
- 2007-08 budget
- that he attended the July 10-12 CSU Board of Trustees’ meeting. Carol Terry and her staff are to be commended for meeting the deadline for accomplishing HSU’s year-end closing on schedule.
- that he attended meetings of the Broadband Task Force on June 29 and July 12 where significant progress is being made, with a final report to be presented to the Governor in October.
- that he has organized a tour of the new Behavioral and Social Sciences building for tribal and community leaders (July 25, 3:00).
- that he spoke to the Garberville Rotary group on July 17.

President Richmond reviewed information contained in these two articles.
Other Reports
Vice President Butler reported:
- that Summer Preview took place on July 13 with approximately 400 prospective students attending.
- that Humboldt Orientation is taking place on July 20-22 for approximately 250 freshmen and 75 transfer students.
- there is a significant number of new students coming to HSU as a result of the athletic program (87 new students in the football program), partially due to the WUE (Western Undergraduate Exchange) program.
- that the annual report for Student Affairs has been completed; he distributed copies to the University Executive Committee members.
- HSU, in partnership with the CHP and Arcata Police, has received a $72,500 grant related to alcohol education, promotional activities, and enforcement.
Jená Burges reported:
- that Academic Affairs has been monitoring fall enrollments, especially the GE courses.
- that many office moves have been taking place on campus as a result of the completion of the BSS building.
- that the WASC effort is continuing; an awareness campaign is being coordinated with Public Affairs.
Vice President Gunsalus reported:
- that additional candidates for the Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications position will be invited to campus.
Vice President Coffey reported:
- that the Chancellor’s Office has authorized HSU to keep the west gym, rather than demolishing it.
- that a new, larger marketplace will be included in the new housing project which will replace the existing marketplace in the Student and Business Services building.
- the recently-acquired apartments on campus are being prepared for student housing.
- the campus houses identified for demolition will be removed before school starts (or moved if someone meets the required guidelines).
Carol Terry reported:
- that she participated in an exit conference for the athletics audit – there are outstanding items which will need to be addressed by the campus.
Anna Kircher reported:
- that there was a recent IT security breach – appropriate notifications will be made.
- the new Information Security Officer, John McBrearty, started on July 19.
- expansion of wireless coverage on campus will be in place for the start of fall term and a streamlined approval process for guest access is being developed.

Anna Kircher reviewed the draft electronic mail guidelines, which is a white paper for information only and not intended as a policy.
