President’s Report
President Richmond reported that he was recently interviewed by the new editors of the Lumberjack newspaper and was very impressed by them and their anticipated changes in the publication.
President Richmond, along with Jená Burges, Vice Provost, and Tasha Souza, Faculty Development Coordinator, recently discussed academic leadership training possibilities with Gabrielle Parkinson and Diane Foster (Diane Foster & Associates, Leadership and Career Coaching & Facilitation).
President Richmond shared information obtained at a recently-attended AASCU (American Association of State Colleges and Universities) Summer Council of Presidents, including discussions of the book, "True North" by Bill George (http://www.truenorthleaders.com/).
Other Reports
Library Dean Ray Wang reported:
- that the Learning Commons project continues.
the new Veteran’s Center will be located in the Library basement with their opening celebration scheduled on August 28 in the Kate Buchanan Room.
Provost Bob Snyder reported:
- 2008-09 planning is underway, with budget and institutional change being topics of discussion at the Academic Affairs retreat.
Denice Helwig reported:
- that in response to recommendations received from the WASC team, Keeling & Associates have been contracted and will be visiting campus on September 8-10 to address HSU’s decision-making processes. In addition, David Maddox, a financial consultant, will be visiting HSU in October to discuss our budget development and management processes.
Vice President Coffey reported:
- it has been a busy summer with construction and renovation of facilities including Harry Griffith Hall, completion of the new Kinesiology and Athletic building (and pool), Learning Commons, and Gist Hall renovations. Bids are being circulated for a new greenhouse as well as the construction of the new Schatz building.
Associate Dean Steve Smith reported:
- there has been ongoing coordination involving department chairs and others in addressing course demand as a result of the record-high number of incoming students.
Associate Dean Sue MacConnie reported:
- she, along with Dean Hurlbut, attended a Education Deans retreat recently where much of the discussion focused on implementation of the new teacher performance assessment as mandated by SB 1209, and the lack of funding from the State. (President Richmond asked for an estimate of the cost for HSU).
CIO Anna Kircher reported:
- that her area has been kept busy this summer by the many campus construction projects
- an awareness campaign for Zimbra implementation is being planned
Vice President Butler reported:
- the largest freshmen class is anticipated at HSU this fall semester
- a full-time position has been created to handle student discipline issues
