A Political Rally on the Quad

Welcome

The Department of Government & Politics is known for its leadership role in studying and doing politics at Humboldt State University.

Our faculty is engaged in researching, teaching and practicing politics related to such issues as the environment, globalization, peace and conflict, from Humboldt County to Sacramento, Washington, D.C., and beyond.

We offer a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. Our academic program is rigorous and innovative, with three emphases areas: Environment and Sustainability; Advocacy and Institutions; and Globalization. In the Department of Government & Politics, we study both theories and practices: how people should act and how they do act. We study the economic and social distribution of power among individuals and institutions, and reflect on values such as justice, peace, and the betterment of humankind and their environment.

Students majoring in political science are not only studying and discussing in the classroom, but are also active both on and off campus. Current and former students hold elected positions in student and city government, staff positions in state government and congressional offices, volunteer and paid positions in non-profit organizations. Many of our students go on to law school or pursue advanced degrees in the social sciences.

It’s an exciting and dynamic department—take a look at our Departmental Blog to find out about recent and up-coming activities.
