Academic Programs

The Department of Government & Politics offers a major and minor in the discipline of political science. We also participate in a variety of interdisciplinary programs.

The major in Political Science consists of 5 required lower-division courses, 4-5 upper-division electives, an experience or methods requirement, and a capstone senior seminar, for a total of 39 units. Majors work with a faculty advisor in the Department of Government & Politics to complete their major contract.

Full description of the major program:
We offer all five of the required lower-division courses each semester. The electives offerings vary from semester to semester. Short descriptions of all of our offerings are available under Political Science in the course description section of the catalog.

The minor in Political Science requires completion of 22 units in political science. The minor contract lists these requirements.

We also offer a minor in International Relations. Students wishing to minor in International Relations should contact the department chair to discuss the IR minor contract.

In addition, the Department of Government & Politics participates in the following interdisciplinary minors:

Appropriate Technology

Criminal Justice

Public Administration

Water Resource Policy

The department offers several courses that fulfill the United States Constitution and California State and Local Government institutions requirements: PSCI 110, PSCI 210, PSCI 359, and PSCI 410. The Institutions requirement may also be met through examination. For more information regarding this examination, contact the Testing Center.

Several faculty members of the department helped developed and currently administer and teach in the Masters in Social Sciences program. The Environment & Community M. A. Program is a signature program of Humboldt State University and enrolls approximately 25 graduate students.
