Eligibility and Stipends

To be eligible, students must not have completed their B.A. or B.S. degree, and must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. (or its possessions). The National Science Foundation's goal is for REU programs to be national in scope, so Humboldt State University undergraduates have a lower probability of being accepted than students from other institutions (but we encourage all applications nonetheless, and have taken/will continue to take students from HSU).

Our REU budget includes: (1) A $4,250 stipend for each summer intern (larger than many other REU programs), (2) An average of $800.00 per student for travel to and from their home institution to HSU, (3) Paid housing while in residence at HSU for the 10 week progam (out of town interns share housing in Creekview apartments on campus in the middle of a redwood forest) 4) An average of $800 per lab to support the research endeavors of each student (to be expended as the mentor sees fit). Note that the funding per lab will be negotiated based on the needs of each project, and that some labs may require more than this amount due to the high cost of reagents (e.g. Taq polymerase). Finally, there is additional funding for some students, who perform admirably during the summer, to present the results of their research at a scientific meeting. Previous students have in fact presented their research results at several national meetings, including: (1) Western Society of Naturalists, (2) Gilbert Ichthyological Society Meeting, (3) Ecological Society of America Meeting, (4) American Society for Microbiology meeting, and (5) The Society for the Advancement of Chicanos & Native Americans in Science (SACNAS).

Many thanks for your interest! Feel free to call (707.826.3656) or email (hsureu2@humboldt.edu) Dr. Craig if you have any questions on any details or if you have particular situations you wish to try and arrange this upcoming summer with regards to your participation in our REU program. We are pleased you are interested, and look forward to getting your application!

Sincerely,

-Sean Craig, Matt Johnson & Mark Wilson (Co-PI's on the grant)
