Having Your Say... and Making a Difference

Humboldt State is a student-led university— by that, we mean our students have a say in their education and in life on campus. There are a number of student organizations on campus, for instance, dedicated to promoting community activism and supporting diversity. The MultiCultural Center, for example, celebrates and honors diversity, housing 11 active clubs and programs including the American Indian Alliance, Black Student Union, Latinos Unidos, South Asian Student Association, and the Queer Student Union.

Likewise, the neighboring Women’s Resource Center raises awareness about social justice issues through dialogue and expression. Twice a semester the Center produces a magazine called The Matrix, which serves as a forum for feminist ideas, poetry, fiction, news, politics, and art, and has been recognized by “The Nation” as one of the country’s top college publications.

The Youth Educational Services (Y.E.S.) House promotes community volunteerism, from mentoring youth and working with the homeless community, to leading rock climbing and hiking adventures for children.

Outside magazine calls HSU’s hometown of Arcata one of the top 15 college towns in the United States in which to work, play, study, and live.
