The Seating Chart and Knowing Student Names:

ADDED SIDE NOTE from Pat Egenberger. Pat’s feature of Lesson Design ALSO reminds us of the variety of teaching assignments out there.

I know one thing that is important for me in design is to quickly assess my audience since I get new students every four weeks.  I don't have the luxury of spending two weeks training them or getting to know them.  I have to do it fast.  With the sixth graders I talk to their teacher ahead of time to find out who the special needs students are, where they need to sit and who already speaks and/or reads and writes Spanish.  I make a seating chart that has a boy and girl sharing each table.  Usually that's the pattern.  Having that seating chart is really important because I need to be able to say each person's name when I talk to them.”
