The
Seating Chart and Knowing Student Names: ADDED SIDE NOTE from
Pat Egenberger. Pat’s feature of Lesson Design ALSO reminds us of the
variety of teaching assignments out there. “I know one thing that is important for me in design is to quickly assess my audience since I get new students every four weeks. I don't have the luxury of spending two weeks training them or getting to know them. I have to do it fast. With the sixth graders I talk to their teacher ahead of time to find out who the special needs students are, where they need to sit and who already speaks and/or reads and writes Spanish. I make a seating chart that has a boy and girl sharing each table. Usually that's the pattern. Having that seating chart is really important because I need to be able to say each person's name when I talk to them.”
