Conclusion
As
noted above, Vickie Greenbaum started Friday evening by asking whether
Design was even an appropriate word for Lesson preparation. The discussion of the two tapes suggested,
in fact, that there are some patterns we might call features of Lesson
Design. Pat E. commented: “Think about this for three minutes--the students
automatically were following the teachers directions. In the US
the kids decide whether or not they want to think about things for three
minutes. Some of them might decide not to think about it.” Miles pointed to a recent article in the New
York Times where Tom Friedman suggested that the problems in the Middle
East begin with authoritarian classrooms and day-after-day Memorize-and-Repeat
Lessons. Do the classrooms of
democracies develop different kinds of students? Are these students harder to control and order about? (Is Lesson Design an international issue?)
