Our Bridge Program allows advanced students to take university academic courses as part of their IELI intensive English program. The goal of this program is to provide a smooth and gradual transition from EFL classes to full-time university matriculation with the support that assures success.
Qualified students may enter the Brige Program at the beginning of the autumn semester in August, the winter semester in January, or take an academic course during one of the summer sessions in May.
To qualify for the Bridge program, a student must have earned a TOEFL score of 500 or above on the paper based test (PBT), or the internet based test (iBT) of 61 and above. Of course, students may elect to remain in full-time EFL courses; one is never required to be in the Bridge Program and take university courses.
There are three Bridge levels: A, B and, C.
BRIDGE A
Requirement: PBT TOEFL 500 to 517 or iBT TOEFL 61 to 67.
Bridge A students must attend three IELI classes and may take one academic university course of 3 or 4 semester units (1 semester = 16 weeks).
Until August 2009, the tuition for the three IELI classes of Bridge A is $2,500 for the 16-week semester. The tuition for a typical 3-unit university lecture class is $525 per semester. The University is on a semester system, 16 weeks of classes and one week of exams at the end. Thus, the total tuition for a semester of Bridge A will be $3,025.
Note: at present, university lecture courses are $175 per unit, activity courses are $205 per unit, and laboratory courses are $220 per unit per semester. The exact cost of any Bridge level per semester will depend upon the number and type of academic units taken and the number of IELI classes taken.
BRIDGE B
Requirement: PBT TOEFL 519 to 550 or iBT TOEFL 68 to 79.
Bridge B students must register for at least 6 semester units of university classes and take 2 IELI classes. Usually, this comprises two 3-unit university classes and two IELI classes. If the student chooses to take fewer than 6 academic units, it will be necessary to add IELI classes in order to remain a full-time in-status student in accordance with the government requirements of the F-1 Student Visa.
Until August 2009, the Bridge B tuition is $1,700 per semester for two IELI classes and $1,050 for 6 semester units of university academic classes. The typical total tuition fee for a Bridge B student is $2,750 per semester. The exact cost of any Bridge level per semester will depend upon the number and type of academic units taken and the number of IELI classes taken.
BRIDGE C
Requirement: PBT TOEFL over 550 or iBT TOEFL over 79.
Bridge C students must take one IELI class and must register for at least 9 semester units of university academic classes.
Until August 2009, the IELI tuition for Bridge C is $900 per semester and the tuition cost for 9 units of university lecture classes is $1,575 per semester. The total cost for a semester of Bridge C is about $2,475. The exact cost of any Bridge level per semester will depend upon the number and type of academic units taken and the number of IELI classes taken.
