Our Bridge Program allows advanced students to take university academic courses as part of their IELI intensive English program. The goal of this program is to provide a smooth and gradual transition from EFL classes to full-time university matriculation with the support that assures success.
Qualified students may enter the Brige Program at the beginning of the autumn semester in August, the winter semester in January, or the summer session in May.
To qualify for the Bridge program, a student must have earned a TOEFL score of 500 or above on the paper based test (PBT), or the internet based (iBT) equivalent. Of course, students may elect to remain in full-time EFL courses; one is never required to be in the Bridge Program and take university courses.
There are two levels of Bridge; Level I and Level II
Level I Bridge students must register for at least six semester units of university classes through the Office of Extended Education. Generally, this comprises two 3-unit university classes. If the student chooses to take fewer units, it will be necessary to add IELI classes in order to remain a full-time in-status student in accordance with the requirements of the F-1 Student Visa.
The IELI tuition for Bridge I is $1390 per semester. The tuition for the university classes is $130 per unit for lecture classes, $154 per unit for activity classes (such as theatre, dance, art), and $175 per semester unit for laboratory classes. The typical total tuition fee for a Level I Bridge student is between $2170 and $2430 per semester, depending upon the number of units and type of classes taken.
Level II Bridge students must take the IELI Bridge Writing class. and must register for at least 9 semester units of university academic classes through the Office of Extended Education.
The IELI tuition for Bridge II is $730 per semester. The tuition cost for university classes is between $1900 and $2300 per semester, depending upon the type and number of units taken.
There are three advantages of the IELI Bridge Program: 1. Bridge students transition gradually and smoothly from EFL to full-time university study with the support of IELI teachers and staff, and 2. up to 24 units of academic credit taken in the Bridge Program can be apllied toward the Bachelor's degree. 3. The tuition cost per semester for an IELI Bridge student is from $238 to $109 per semester unit. In comparison, the tuition per semester of a non-resident or international matriculated student is $5,657 per semester, or $470 per semester unit.
