There are various living arrangements available to IELI students.
Student housing and accommodations are much less expensive in this area compared with urban areas of the U.S.A. The cost of living here is also much cheaper. In addition, we live in a very beautiful and safe community. People are friendly to international students. There are many coffee shops and an interactive student population. Both beaches (with cold water) and skiing are available, and San Francisco is a short 6-hour drive away. Our air is clean and our forests, rivers and beaches are pristine.
Students wishing to live in the International Student Resident Hall are required to sign a lease for up to one academic year (August through May). Space is limited in the Resident Hall and will fill up quickly. Please apply early.
The Resident Hall provides you with a room and three meals a day on weekdays and two meals on Saturday and Sunday. August to May, room and board will cost about $6,000 to $8,000. The exact cost depends upon whether you have a private or shared room and the meal-plan that you choose. Prices are always subject to change. For current pricing, check the HSU Housing Department's website.
Some IELI students choose to live in student apartments. These are a bus ride to campus. They are similar to dorm living except that you have a furnished private room with a shared kitchen, and bathroom facilities. The cost is $495 per month. You will be expected to pay a $700 deposit fee. Groceries are inexpensive, or you can buy a campus meal card and eat on campus. Please email IELI for more details.
Home Stay Program / Room rent
It is preferable for an IELI student to live with a family. The student will be able to practice their English and experience integral American living.
A number of rooms are available with families in the community. For $700 per month, you will have your own room, bed and study desk. Utilities and food are also included with the Home Stay Program, this includes a cooked meal at night and a continental breakfast. Some hosts will be willing to rent a furnished room with utilities. In this case you will buy your own food and cook your own meals for $475 to $525 per month. It is necessary to make arrangements before you arrive, contact us and we will do our best to find accommodations for you with a family.
Please fill out the questionnaire (Word DOC, 94 KB) and email it back to us at ieli@humboldt.edu. Please read the contract (Word DOC, 70 KB) regarding the home stay/rent agreement.
You must give your arrival date at Arcata and flight number in order for us to finalize a home stay for you. We are limited in the number of Home Stays available please contact us to make arrangements as early as possible.
You can search and apply for the off-campus listings from this link. You will probably be asked to sign a lease for a year and give a deposit. TAKE NOTE that signing a lease means you are legally bound to stay for the term of the lease. Usually our students wait to move into shared accommodations until they feel more confident here in America.
You can search this site for a roommate: www.hsu.och101.com
Students will be responsible for their own transport costs to and from the University.
Please keep in contact with me (Nicola) regarding your accommodations, as housing can be very hard to find. The earlier the arrangements the easier it will be to find a place to live.
