Humboldt State University is renowned nationally and internationally for its strong educational assets such as intensive research and unique programs, and small class sizes that allow students and faculty to communicate on a one-to-one basis. It has especially outstanding natural science and resources programs, and also emphasizes the importance of liberal arts programs. Students look at environmental and social issues on a global scale and make efforts towards the solution on individual and community levels. Come join us at our campus on the northern California coast surrounded by towering redwood trees.
If students have not yet taken the TOEFL or need to improve their language skills in order to succeed in an academic program, they may enroll in our intensive English program (IELI). This multi-level English program develops students' language skills through an integrated curriculum and various activities. Small classes of 8 to 12 students allow individual attention to students' needs and create a friendly learning environment. The IELI activity coordinator plans activities including conversation hours, trips, potluck parties and movie nights, which encourage students to enhance their English skills while enjoying time with friends.
Our campus is located in Arcata, a small college town on the northern California surrounded by abundant natural beauty. The community is free from heavy traffic and air pollution, and students enjoy safety owing to the warm and welcoming people of Arcata. Despite its small size, there are a number of locally owned coffee shops and restaurants, galleries and specialty stores around town, and numerous festivals and concerts are held throughout the year.
