COURSE INTRUCTORS:
Christina
Begley, M.A., is a mediator and training consultant specializing
in development of reflective practice skills among both new and seasoned
professionals. She has conducted mediations, facilitations and training
for a variety of organizations and groups. Among her research endeavors,
Christina has developed training curriculum and designed programs emphasizing
the need for consistent analysis of professional practice for growth and
development in the field of mediation.
Barret
Brown, J.D., specializes in family and custody mediation
services. Brown has more than 10 years of experience serving as a Child
Custody Mediator and Family Law Facilitator in Humboldt County. Brown has
also worked as an instructor for the Institute, teaching the "Family
and Interpersonal Mediation" course.
Susan
Carpenter, Ed.D., was the founding director of the Program
for Community Problem Solving in Washington, D.C., and she served ten years
as the associate director of ACCORD Associates in Boulder, Colorado, mediating
complex public disputes and training others to handle conflicts productively.
She advises and trains groups on effective ways to handle differences and
reach agreements. Susan is the co-author of Managing Public Disputes: A
Practical Guide to Handling Conflict and Reaching Agreement.
John A. Gromala
limits his practice to mediation, facilitation, consultation and training
seminars for mediators and attorneys. In addition to resolving conflicts,
he uses mediation during the formation or reorganization of a business and
during Estate Planning to minimize potential for future conflict. His mediation
experience includes: commercial, construction and labor disputes; crisis
management (large and small organizations); dissolution of corporations
and partnerships, securities transactions; employment discrimination and
harassment, hostile work environment; environmental and land use concerns,
real estate valuation; facilitation of private and public conferences, public
access problems;personal and property damage claims, tort actions;will,
trust and conservatorship/guardianship contests. His Web

Larry
Hoover is founder and current Director of U. C. Davis
Mediation Services. He designed and assisted in the implementation of both
Californias State personnel Board and the Department of Fair Employment
and Housings mediation programs. He is also a founder of Californias
Dispute Resolution Council, a member of the Association for Conflict Resolution,
and an associate at the Center for Collaborative Policy. Larry has mediated
over 700 workplace disputes and lectures widely on conflict management.
Ron Kelly
is one of the principal architects of California Mediation law, and a founder
of the California Dispute Resolution Council and the Northern California
Mediation Association. He advises organizations and governmental entities
on the formation of ADR law and policy. He teaches and trains through many
universities and associations. The winner of five major awards from ADR
professional organizations, he mediates and arbitrates cases through his
Berkeley office.
Tasha
Souza, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Communication
at Humboldt State University. and Co-Director of the Institute for Study
of Alternative Dispute Resolution. Since 1993, she has taught courses in
training and consulting, instructional communication, conflict management,
team building, gender and communication, interpersonal communication, and
communication in organizations. Tasha is also the Practicum Coordinator
for ISADR.
Christine
Taylor, M.A., has been formally involved in the conflict
resolution field for the past eight years. Once Associate Director of ISADR,
she has been providing guidance to course participants as training coach
for six years. Christine enjoys her practice as a mediator and consultant
in Humboldt County, CA. and assisting parties to resolve conflicts from
land use to interpersonal matters.
Jon
Townsend, M.A., has more than 30 years of experience in
the fields of mediation, facilitation, negotiation, diversity and cross-cultural
conflict resolution, management and prevention. He has trained approximately
30,000 people in conflict resolution skills and in intercultural communication.
Internationally, Jon has provided consultations and training in Nicaragua,
Mexico, Costa Rica, the former USSR, Russia, Guatemala, Ecuador, Cuba, Canada,
Australia and Poland. He has numerous awards, including a Presidential citation
for his work in the area of job retraining, and a “Mediator of the
Decade” award. His mediation practice focuses on environmental issues,
government-to-government concerns, workplace, cross-cultural and ADA mediations,
building successful teams, developing successful labor-management negotiations,
and facilitating groups. Jon is a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Indian

Elizabeth Watson, Ph.D., is a Professor of Sociology at Humboldt State University and is the Director of ISADR, the Executive Director of the Center for the Resolution of Environmental Disputes (CRED), a Senior Associate for the California Center for Public Dispute Resolution at CSU Sacramento, a member of ACR, the California Dispute Resolution Council (CDRC), and the American Sociological Association (ASA). Betsy mediates timber harvest plans, land use and workplace conflicts in northern California.
