SSH Secure Shell
SSH Secure Shell is a program that provides for secure network services over an insecure network. SSH Secure Shell replaces other, less secure terminal applications, such as Telnet and regular FTP. It allows you to securely login to remote host computers, to execute commands safely on a remote computer, and to provide secure encrypted and authenticated communications in an untrusted network.
SSH - Download and install the SSH Secure Shell client software.
Common HSU Central Server Host Names
The following is a list of common Host names for some of the central servers at HSU:
Email Server - axe.humboldt.edu
Web Server - sorrel.humboldt.edu
Instructional Server - redwood.humboldt.edu
Note: If connecting from campus, you can enter just the server name axe, sorrel or redwood.
SFTP for Web Publishing

- Click Quick Connect (either
or
.) - Type in the Host Name, for example sorrel.humboldt.edu, and your HSU User Name ( i.e. abc123).
- Click Connect.
- Enter the Password associated with your HSU User Name at the prompt.
The files that you transfer to the Web Server must have permissions set that allow people to access your web site. To change the default permissions set by SFTP when files are transferred to the server:
- Click Edit from the menu bar, and then click Settings.
- On the left-hand side of the screen, click Advanced under the File Transfer section.

- In the Upload section of the Advanced File Transfer settings, uncheck the box used to preserve permissions. Set the Default File Permissions to 644. All files that you transfer using SFTP will then have permissions that allow the file to be viewed by anyone accessing your web page. You can change the file permissions as required using SSH Secure Shell.
