Tech Guides :: Email

Local Service

All students, faculty and staff are provided an email account on the local campus server for the entire time they are associated with HSU. The name of the email server is axe. Additional email server account information can be found at Central Systems Account & Activation .

Activate Your Account - Instructions for activating your email account.

Preferred Email Account Options

Email Address and Campus List Options - Establish a preferred email address for all HSU electronic correspondence, and choose which automatically distributed university email messages you want to receive.

Personalized Email Alias for Faculty and Staff

Email Address Alias - A new service which assigns an HSU email account an alias comprised of your first and last name. The service includes the ability to create two additional informal aliases.

Accessing Your Mail

Mail Client Setup and SMTP Authentication - Instructions for setting up mail client software to send and receive your HSU email messages from your desktop, both on and off campus. Instructions are provided for Eudora, MS Outlook, MS Entourage, Mozilla Thunderbird, and Mac Mail.

Managing Disk Space - The INBOX in your HSU email account is limited in size. This is referred to as disk quota. You should limit the number of messages saved in your INBOX to prevent exceeding this quota, which prevents you from receiving new messages. Depending on how you access your mail, you should delete unwanted messages, or move messages you want to save to a new folder. If you are using a mail client, you can set up the preferences to remove messages from the email server when they are downloaded to your desktop. If you do go over quota you may have difficulty deleting messages. If you are having difficulty, try following these instructions for deleting messages when over quota using either WebMail, ssh for Macintosh, or ssh for Windows. You will need to use ssh if you cannot login to WebMail.

Check Disk Quota - Check the disk quota limit of your email account.

WebMail - HSU has provided a local web-based email service that allows you to access your axe email from any computer that has a Web browser and access to the Internet both on and off campus.

WebMail is easy to use. From Netscape, Internet Explorer or other web browser, you simply enter the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) of HSU's WebMail server, webmail.humboldt.edu , the same way you retrieve any web page. WebMail displays its Log In screen. Enter your HSU User Name and Password.

Pine - Pine is the email program used on axe. It will allow you to send and receive email from your axe account. Print a copy of these instructions for reference. This document is in pdf format and requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Virus and Spam Management

Filtering Email Attachments - In an effort to provide vital protection against malicious computer viruses spread through email, Humboldt State University now actively filters (blocks) email attachments that represent a known and significant threat of viral infection. This link provides information and instructions for filtered email attachments.

Virus Protection and Email Security - Information on anti-virus software and how HSU screens email to protect your computer from viruses.

Using Filters and Barracuda technology to Manage SPAM - Instructions on setting up Whitelists, Blacklists, NOSPAM and filters to manage spam in your HSU email account. Instructions are included for the HSU Email Server, HSU Webmail , Eudora , MS Outlook , and MS Entourage .
