How to remove messages through SSH in Mac OS X to correct being over quota.
1. To begin, open up Terminal (Located under /Applications/Utilities/)
2. Type in: ssh abc123@axe.humboldt.edu (where abc123 is your HSU User Name). For example:

3. Now press enter. If this is your first time connecting through SSH, it may ask you if you want to continue connecting. Type yes if it asks you to, and type in your HSU User Name Password. Note that when you type in your password, the cursor will not move.

4. Once you have connected, you will see this screen:

5. Type pine and press enter. You will now see a screen similar to this one:

6. Select Folder List and press enter. You will now see a screen similar to this one:

7. Make sure that INBOX is selected and press enter. You should now see a list of your messages. You can select a message by pressing the up and down arrow keys on your keyboard.

8. From here, we can begin deleting messages. You can see the size of your messages in parentheses.
Students are allocated a 10 MB quota, Staff and Faculty are given 50 MB. Messages displaying an (M) in the parenthesis are most likely responsible for you being over quota, as they are over a megabyte. However, many smaller messages, listed as (K), can also lead to you being over quota.
To mark a message for deletion, highlight the message using your up and down arrow keys, and press the D key. You will notice that on the left hand column, a D will appear next to that message.
9. When you are done selecting the messages you would like to delete, you can then press the X key to permanently delete these messages from your mailbox. To verify, the following message will appear at the bottom of your screen. Type Y to continue:

11. From here, you can type Q to quit pine. It will ask you if you really want to quit. Type Y to continue:

12. To make sure that you are under quota, type quota and press enter. You will see a screen similar to this:
13. Your quota is listed under the quota column. The actual size of your mailboxes are listed under the blocks column. As long as the numbers in the blocks column are smaller than the numbers in the quota column, you're fine.
