Tech Guides :: Email :: Mail Clients
What is SMTP (Port 25) blocking?
HSU blocks the standard port 25 for outgoing SMTP connections for off campus users. If you receive an error while sending mail from your HSU account while off campus, you can set your email client to use port 587 for outgoing messages. See the instructions below to adjust your settings.
Blocking Port 25 helps to reduce unwanted email like viruses and spam from bypassing our central servers which have the ability to filter viruses and spam. Many viruses, spam-bots, and other security threats mail themselves without going through our central spam and virus filtering servers, thus blocking port 25 will help stop these threatening messages.
Most users on-campus will not be affected by this change. If your desktop email client or email servers are already configured to use the central HSU’s email service for sending email, port 25 blocking will have no effect on your ability to send email. Also, the block will have no effect on users of web-based email clients, e.g., Webmail, Hotmail, YahooMail, etc.
RezNet customers will need to follow the off campus settings using the instructions listed below.
POP vs. IMAP Which to Choose?
Humboldt State University supports two email protocols: POP and IMAP. This document will help you decide which email protocol is best suited to your needs. Read More >>

Using POP, IMAP and SSL
Post Office Protocol (POP) - Good choice if you only connect
from one location. Allows your workstation to retrieve mail that the server is
holding for it. Normally, mail is downloaded to your email client and then deleted from your server account. You
can override the deletion of messages from the server on download by checking the leave mail on server option during
setup.
Just be sure to set a deletion schedule so you don't exceed your allotted space on the server.
Internet Messaging Access Protocol (IMAP) - Good choice if you check your mail from several
different locations. IMAP allows a client to access and manipulate electronic mail messages on a server. Your mail messages
remain on the server. New message headers are downloaded so you can see what messages you have more quickly. If you choose
to view a message, it is downloaded to your workstation.
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) - Required as part of your email setup for a secure connection when receiving mail using your HSU account. SSL encrypts your HSU User Name, Password and mail
messages as they travel over the internet, ensuring that others are unable to acquire your personal information or view your messages.
