HSU User Name and Password Secure Authentication Project

The Humboldt State University Secure Authentication Project provides a single authentication source for access to many electronic resources on campus. A single authentication source means that a student, staff, or faculty member can log in to any campus system using the same HSU User Name and Password. The HSU User Name is your campus e-mail address before the @ symbol. Many systems on campus use this same HSU User Name, but the passwords have been managed on a system-by-system basis. Consequently, a user would have to remember numerous passwords and login over and over again to use various campus systems. The goal of the Secure Authentication project is to simplify an HSU user's experience with electronic resources on campus while increasing security. HSU User Name and Password will make the tedious and confusing task of remembering multiple user names and passwords a thing of the past. There is a single web page for activating, checking, and changing your password through HSU WebReg.

The other main goal of this project has been to eliminate any insecure methods of authentication from campus servers, to protect user's passwords and sensitive data. Telnet and FTP were replaced by the SSH protocol in Fall '05. The Moodle server also switched to encrypted logins in Fall '05. Secure versions of the POP and IMAP protocols have been in place on HSU's e-mail server, and will be the only allowed connection method as of March 31, 2006.

In other news on the email front, UCS is moving forward with a staged plan to improve email system responsiveness here at HSU. The first stage will connect the Axe email server to a much faster HP storage system. This is planned for the Spring, 2006 semester and should greatly alleviate the slowness seen by the campus at peak usage times. The second stage is a complete rebuild of the HSU mail transfer and delivery system as a set of clustered services residing on new HP Blade servers. This is scheduled for development and testing over Summer '06 with a Fall '06 roll-out.
