Tech Guides :: Information Security :: Secure Communication

Secure Communication Overview

Computers and the programs that run on them use user-names and passwords to determine who can access them. Many programs allow the transmission of this information to be sent (transmitted) “in the clear.” For the security of HSU users' confidential data, ITS can no longer support systems and programs that transmit user-names and passwords in clear text over the network. This transition will undoubtedly cause some pain and, initially, extra work for everyone involved, but the end result will be a safer, more trustworthy computing environment.

Email Client Overview

What this means to most users is that their email client (Outlook, Eudora, Entourage) will have to be re-configured to use secure communications. This process consists of installing a certificate file and re-configuring the email client to use SSL (Secure Socket Layer protocol).

ITS Blocks Port 25 for Sending Email from off campus

HSU blocks the standard port 25 for outgoing SMTP connections for off campus users, including ResNet. If you receive an error while sending mail from your HSU account while off campus, you can set your email client to use port 587 for outgoing messages.
This chage will take affect Monday, October 3.
Individuals on campus will still need to adjust their email client settings to make a secure connection.

Remote Login

Those who remotely login to campus servers using Telnet will need to use a new program called SSH Secure Shell which is available for download from the Help Desk site. The PC uses a client called SSH and Macintosh workstations have clients called FUGU and JellyfiSSH.

SSH Software Information

Web Publishing Overview

Those who transmit files to or from campus servers using FTP or Dreamweaver, will need to use an SSH client (detailed above) or a newer version of Dreamweaver.
