User Responsibility
It is imperative that all users of the University's computing, communications, and information resources realize how much these resources require responsible behavior from all users. Simply put, we are all responsible for the well-being of the computing, network, and information resources we use.
Federal / State Laws & Policies- Some activites that violate State and Federal laws include, but are not limited to:
- Child Pornography
- Distributions of Pornography to Minors
- Copyright Infringement
- Bomb Threats
- Pyramid Schemes
- Chain Mail
HSU Appropriate Use Policy - Some activities that are prohibited by the HSU AUP include, but are not limited to:
- Spamming
- Attempting to bypass Network Security
- Probing the Network
- Forging your Address in Email
- Running a Business From Your Accounts
- Harassing or Threatening Others
- Using Someone Else's Account Without Their Permission
- Accessing System Files That Don't Belong to You
Administrative Process for Misuse of Privileges
First Offense: The following will take place.
- You will receive an official memo alerting you to the inappropriate activity. Note: If you receive a memo and you did not conduct the activity, respond immediately. An unauthorized person my be using your account without your knowledge or permission.
- Depending on the severity of the violation, a complaint may be referred to Student Affairs, Faculty Affairs, or Human Resources for further action.
- If the violation involves threats or illegal activity, a referral will be made to the University Police Department.
- Your account is added to a list of possible violators of the Appropriate Use Policy.
Second Offense: One of the following three things will take place.
- You will receive a second official memo alerting you to the inappropriate activity. This memo will inform you that the third violation will result in deactivation of you account.
- You will be required to meet with the Information Security Coordinator to discuss the activity.
- Your account will be deactivated and other sanctions will be applied by the appropriate office.
Account Deactivation: The following will take place.
- You will be required to meet with the Information Security Coordinator to reactive your account.
- If the activity violated California Code or Federal law, you will be required to meet with either Student Affairs, Faculty Affairs or Human Resources and/or the University Police Department before account privileges can be reinstated.
